Overview:
The Animal Technician II-III provides for the basic health and husbandry needs of rodents (mice only) housed in the vivarium, processes equipment, and performs some colony management tasks. The job title and expected major responsibilities will be determined based on prior experience.
This is an essential position which means that punctuality as well as the ability to report to work, even during inclement weather, and on some holidays or other times when BRI suspends operations, is required. We are seeking a candidate to work 20 hours a week. The schedule for this position will be: Saturday and Sunday; 7:00am – 3:30pm. The remaining 4 hours to complete 20 hrs./week is negotiable.
Responsibilities:
Care for animals (mice) in accordance with standard operating procedures and federal regulations and published guidelines. Includes feeding prescribed diets and ensuring that animals have fresh water at all times
Change, sanitize, and sterilize cages and accessory equipment. Requires operation of cage wash equipment and autoclaves
Monitor health and well-being of animals involved in research projects. Report physical or behavioral abnormalities promptly in writing or verbally and record observations on animal health reports. Administer medications or treatments as advised by the Veterinarian or the Animal Technician Supervisor
Handle and care for animals that have been exposed to chemicals or pathogens. Must understand and keep informed about a variety of biohazards. Must follow detailed instructions for personal protection as well as the protection of other animals and personnel in the area
Maintain and disinfect animal rooms and support areas. Includes sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, washing and disinfecting floors, walls, ceilings, sinks, and other equipment
Participate in on-the job training, staff meetings, and individual study on laboratory animal science that is provided during working hours
Perform other duties as assigned to assist with care and maintenance of research animals
Qualifications:
High school education or equivalent
Animal Technician II: Minimum of 12 months of work experience as an Animal Technician in a laboratory animal facility or equivalent
Animal Technician III: Minimum of 3-5 years of related experience as an animal technician in a laboratory animal facility or equivalent
Good verbal and written communication skills
Able to wear negative and/or positive pressure respirators, and personal protective equipment
Ability to lift and move 50 lbs. on a regular basis and sustained physical activities such as bending, balancing, stooping, reaching and remain standing for long periods of time
Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at the Laboratory Animal Technician/Technologist level or equivalent is preferred
Compensation:
Animal Technician II: $20.00 to $27.74 per hour
Animal Technician III: $22.71 to $32.92 per hour
