VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists is looking for a Certified Veterinary Technician to join the Surgery/Anesthesia Department.
We are seeking technicians who enjoy challenging and engaging anesthesia cases, have a desire to further their knowledge in the field, and are committed to acting as a team player. At VCA NWVS, the sense of teamwork and the culture of working together is no less important than the level of medical and surgical care that patients receive.
Location: 16756 SE 82nd Dr. Clackamas, OR 97015
Why We Want You!
As a member of the VCA Surgical team, you will support the Surgical and Specialist teams by creating a positive, low-stress atmosphere for our clients and patients. Your mission will be to win the confidence of every pet parent—by delivering an outstanding client experience—so we can provide exceptional care to every patient. You’ve worked hard for your credentials (CVT, RVT, LVT), and we want you to use the knowledge that you’ve invested your time and talent in. The skills that will be utilized include, but are not limited to:
Complete pre-operative anesthesia planning
Calculate drug dosages and administer pre-/induction medications
Appropriately intubate and secure the airway
Maintenance of an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia with injectable or inhalant anesthetics
Display competency in venous catheterization and patient instrumentation
Display ability to learn arterial catheterization
Knowledge of mechanical ventilator function and demonstrates ability to use ventilators of various types when appropriate
Perform or be trained in safe practice of locoregional anesthesia techniques
Calculate and deliver constant rate infusions
Interpret physiological parameters (heart rate, respiratory rate, end-tidal/inspired CO2, pulse oximetry, blood pressure, body temperature, basic ECG tracings) and decide if intervention is needed for correction. Must be able to communicate with supervising anesthesiologist or veterinarian if parameters are severely abnormal and require intensive intervention
Perform basic recovery procedures (extubation, vital parameter monitoring) and to recognize when other interventions are required, such as administration of sedation/analgesia, supplemental oxygen, and reintubation
Assess pain and perform post-operative pain scoring
Perform basic and advanced life support under the supervision of a veterinarian during a CPR event
Perform procedural checks and routine cleaning of equipment, report malfunctions
Willing to work after-hours/on-call shifts
VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) or (Surgery) welcomed, but not required, equivalent experience considered. Those interested in pursuing a VTS in Anesthesia & Analgesia, or Surgery, will be supported.
Required qualifications include Certified (or eligible) Veterinary Technician in Oregon. Previous experience with companion animal anesthesia (dog/cat), diagnostic imaging, operating room procedures, and post-operative care. Excellent communication skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, specialists, clients, and patients; ability to readily learn new procedures, must be adaptable.
Schedule: Full-time opportunity. Thursday to Saturday 8am – 8:30pm
Compensation: $31 – 36 / hour. Starting range is determined by skill set and years of experience in the field. Financial growth opportunities available.

What makes VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists Unique?
The hospital was built in 1999 as a 10,000 square foot facility but it quickly grew out of that building. Within 10 years the hospital added another 5,000 square feet. A year later an additional 5,000 square foot building was added to create the Imaging Center. In 2016, due to unprecedented growth, a third building with 7,000 square feet was added creating an entire medical complex encompassing many veterinary specialties. With the addition of Radiation Oncology, what started off as a small specialty center has grown into a large campus. The people and resources of VCA NWVS provides pets and clients with the most comprehensive veterinary care in the Portland-Vancouver metro region.
The unofficial motto of the city is “Keep Portland Weird”. It means that Portland is a unique, forward-thinking city with a laid-back sensibility and a wonderful view of the world. It is often referred to as the Greenest City in America and in 2012 was listed among the top ten places to live in the United States. Along with the “green culture” it has environmental sensibilities with tons of farmers markets, opportunities for having your own garden and a large backyard chicken raising community. This is an outdoors person’s dream with mountains, beach, and forest activities within minutes reach. The weather is mild thus ensuring year-round activities and the relatively low population practically guarantees you having the trails to yourself. The city has multiple neighborhoods with their own traits, but all are a pet lover’s paradise. Portland ranks first in the country with the most dog parks per capita and often voted “Pet Friendliest City in America.”
