Role: Development Chemist
Location: Irvine
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £40,000

Job Purpose

As a member of the Technical NPD team, this role is responsible for managing the product formulation & product performance from conception through to product launch in the market.
The role demands proven technical expertise in Aerosol products plus hands-on experience of developing and delivering products to meet NPD time lines in an FMCG environment. The role is also responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the process – from the initial lab work, through the claims support, key sign-off stages and manufacturing scale-up – are delivered on time and on cost.

Key Responsibilities

Support the existing portfolio of products and develop a portfolio of new formulations that are cost-effective, delivered on time, and compliant with relevant legislation.

Manage the development process from lab through to plant scale-up – working with Lab, Process, Purchasing, Production, Engineering, QA, and SHE teams.

Co-ordinate project feasibility assessments and support Product Managers with timely technical input for tenders and quotes.

Oversee key sign-off stages for artwork, specifications, and stability, ensuring timely and accurate project completion.

Stay up to date with technological advances in raw materials, lab equipment, and testing methods to maintain a competitive edge.

Prepare product samples using lab and pilot scale equipment.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, including rationalisation of raw materials and packaging.

Support technical team development to meet evolving business needs.

Experience and Qualifications

Degree in Chemistry

3+ years of formulation development experience in aerosols, cosmetics, or personal care products (essential); experience in household products (essential)

Strong project management and commercial acumen

Broad formulator experience and regulatory knowledge (desirable)

Experience working to GMP standards

Person Specification

Dynamic, flexible, and highly organised

Problem-solver with initiative and creativity

Effective team player and capable independent worker

Excellent time and project management skills

Resilient and solutions-focused in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
