As a Part-Time Molecular Laboratory Assistant in our Knoxville, TN office, you will have the opportunity to apply your molecular biology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, engineering (civil, geotechnical, environmental, and water resources) or related field (required) academic knowledge to real-world situations while also learning the business skills needed for a successful career.
SiREM is a state-of-the-art groundwater remediation and environmental technology laboratory in the U.S. and Canada. SiREM provides a suite of unique, science-based products and services, primarily related to the remediation of chlorinated solvents and other recalcitrant chemicals. We are seeking a part-time (16-24 hours/week) laboratory assistant/technician. Candidates are responsible for coordinating their own transportation to and from the office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Genomic DNA/RNA isolation from groundwater and soil samples;
Quantitative PCR of isolated environmental DNA/RNA;
Environmental sample reception;
Groundwater sample preparation for molecular genetic analyses;
Preparation and assembly of environmental sampling kits requested by clients;
Data collection, input and analysis, including tables and figures;
Assist with report writing;
General laboratory duties including inventory, ordering supplies and housekeeping;
Complying with the correct procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations;
Working under ISO/IEC 17025 requirements;
Working under EPA’s Good Lab Practice Standards (GLPS);
Participate in the writing and reviewing of controlled documents such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, and methods;
Prepare chemical solutions according to standard procedures and protocols;
Provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all laboratory-related activities, as required;
Assist with laboratory chemical hygiene, sample testing, and treatability studies;
Follow instructions and interact with other lab and office staff;
Other duties as assigned
Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education or experience. (required)
Enrolled in or completed Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (U.S.) in molecular biology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, or related field (preferred)
Preferred degree focus areas are environmental or chemical engineering, microbiology, biochemistry or chemistry. (required)
At least 2 years of directly applicable biology, microbiology, molecular biology, environmental engineering or chemistry including experimental set-up and operation experience. (preferred)
Focused and detail-orientated self-starter (required)
Ability to work in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment (required)
Familiarity with fundamental concepts in biology, molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, and/or environmental science (required)
Hands-on laboratory experience (preferred)
Ability to read, understand, and use Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), standard operating procedures, task hazard analyses, and published methods. (required)
Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
Ability to regularly use hands to grip, grasp, finger, handle, or feel; and to sit, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
Experience with Microsoft Office (preferred)
Outstanding academic credentials and exceptional interpersonal, technical writing, and problem-solving skills. (required)
Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
