The Upstream Process Development group is seeking a Principal Scientist, Group Leader with experience in microbial technologies. A Principal Scientist Group Leader is responsible for managing a group of scientists and providing technical or scientific leadership within the research and development organization. The individual typically leads multiple projects, is expected to identify and resolve complex technical project issues, and handles administrative and managerial duties for the group. The Principal Scientist Group Leader effectively balances creativity and innovation by initiating new processes that align with scientific and business needs. The individual is viewed as having a solid theoretical understanding and demonstrated application of current research literature or techniques associated within their own scientific discipline.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities

Microbial Group Leader for Upstream Process Development that manages the microbial department.

Supervises and develops a group of up to 7 direct report scientists.

Responsible for managing one of more client projects. Activities include planning, experimental design, data analysis, and data summaries. Can identify and resolve technical project issues.

Identifies and implements strategic departmental research and development goals.

Participates in global cross-functional teams to solve problems, develop products, or generate strategies.

Accountable for accomplishing project and department goals and objectives; anticipates and prioritizes workflow to achieve desired outcomes.

Support Marketing & Sales activities such as proposal/scope of work review, present on behalf of department, and provide laboratory tours.

Prepares complex proposals and presentations for senior management, including issue identification and resolution.

Quality of work is complete and technically sound to ensure integrity of research.

Ensures safety procedures and culture norms are followed.

Proficiencies

Ability to supervises a group of scientists and provides technical development and mentoring.

Can direct one of more client or internal projects.

Independently applies scientific and/or cross-functional knowledge to achieve project goals and is familiar with relevant literature.

Knowledge of upstream technologies and theory particularly in Microbial.

Independent use and application of more complex instrumentation, computer systems, and computer software to support department.

Developed interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work in a team environment. Capable of clear summary and escalation communications with the ability to influence.

Ability to multi-task and adjust activities in a fast-paced environment.

Conceives and generates significant new ideas within specialized areas of development. 

Supervision

This is a supervisory role which includes hiring and promotion recommendations, providing ongoing coaching and feedback, performance management, and ensuring that the goals of the group are met.

May be responsible for the direction of a specialized group within the department.

Achieves results within defined budget, timing and resource parameters; considers the impact of resource allocation on other work stream.

Fosters a cooperative and mutually supportive team environment; holds self and others accountable for team role and contribution.

BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS:

The position typically requires a Ph.D. and 7+ years of experience, M.S. and 13+ years of experience or B.S. and 18+ years of experience in upstream technologies.

 

FDBU works with technical data, technology and materials that are subject to U.S. export laws and regulations. This position will require access to technical data, technology and source code that is controlled under U.S. export laws and regulations, including but not limited to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations at 22 C.F.R. Parts 120 – 130 and Export Administration Regulations in 15 C.F.R. Part 730 – 774, as may be amended. To conform to these laws and regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents of the U.S., protected individuals as defined by 8 USC 1324(b)(a)(3) (i.e., asylees and refugees) or otherwise eligible for an export authorization from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce.
