Job Summary
This role is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment and for maintaining the quality and performance of construction materials used in ready-mix concrete production. The position involves conducting thorough material testing, analyzing results, and providing technical expertise to ensure compliance with industry standards, company policies, and customer requirements.
The individual must maintain a professional appearance, communication style, and work environment, and work effectively with others. This role actively promotes and enforces a positive safety culture and ensures compliance with all applicable governmental regulations related to mobile laboratory operations and materials testing. Compliance with QC/QA policies within the assigned area is required.
Essential Functions
Material Testing
- Perform and oversee comprehensive testing and analysis of construction materials, including aggregates, cement, admixtures, and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).
- Evaluate material quality, suitability, and performance characteristics.
Quality Assurance
- Develop and implement quality control procedures to ensure consistent quality of raw materials and ready-mix concrete products.
- Monitor material samples throughout various stages of production to identify variations or potential issues.
Compliance and Standards
- Stay current with applicable industry standards, codes, and regulations related to material testing and quality control.
- Ensure compliance with local, national, and international standards, including ASTM, ACI, AASHTO, and relevant building codes.
Testing Equipment and Procedures
- Assist with managing calibration records for testing equipment, instruments, and tools.
- Develop and refine testing methodologies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
Data Analysis and Reporting
- Analyze test results and prepare detailed reports outlining findings, interpretations, and recommendations.
- Communicate technical information and results to internal stakeholders, including management, production teams, and customers.
Problem Solving and Troubleshooting
- Identify and resolve material-related issues, including performance variations, specification non-compliance, and customer complaints.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to determine root causes, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence.
- Identify improper construction methods and educate customers and finishers on proper techniques to reduce jobsite failures.
- Work directly with customers to evaluate and resolve concrete-related issues originating from construction practices.
Continuous Improvement
- Continuously evaluate and improve testing processes, methodologies, and quality control procedures.
- Seek opportunities to adopt new technologies or innovative techniques to enhance testing efficiency and accuracy.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with internal teams such as production, quality control, and R&D to ensure seamless integration of material testing activities.
- Maintain effective communication with external partners, including suppliers, customers, and regulatory agencies.
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist with the implementation of NRMCA accreditation and participate in inspections of concrete plants and delivery trucks.
- Review and apply PE stamps to concrete mix designs and other required technical reports.
Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to obtain licensure in multiple states.
- Strong knowledge of construction materials, including aggregates, cement, and admixtures.
- Proficiency in material testing techniques, procedures, and equipment.
- Familiarity with ASTM, AASHTO, ACI, and other relevant industry standards, with the ability to learn new standards as required.
- Excellent analytical and data interpretation skills.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Effective communication skills for conveying technical information to diverse audiences.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Prior experience in materials testing within the ready-mix concrete industry is preferred.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and/or Kansas.
