Job Description The analytical chemist has responsibility for chemical analysis of materials and unknowns with analytical chemistry methods and instrumentation. You will be responsible for executing chemical analysis procedures to standard test methods. Additionally, you will improvise, develop new chemical analysis methods to support engineering and manufacturing activities, primarily problem solving. Occasionally you will be called upon to provide new and improved analytical methods to measure and identify chemicals, known and unknown. The analytical chemist will be responsible for providing test direction and resolving complex technical issues for a variety of projects. You will need to be creative and take initiative as well as use a high level of independent discernment. Responsibilities: Analyze automotive materials and components with analytical chemistry methodology and instrumentation. Extensive understanding of chemistry related analytical methods and methods development. Work with internal and external (industry) chemistry analytical teams to develop thorough understanding of materials to support Product Teams. Support GM worldwide with build and warranty problems. Work with Platforms and Product Teams to develop chemical measurement technology necessary to support GM products worldwide. Significant understanding of chemical properties, chemicals, and interactions with component hardware, and sampling and analysis techniques to characterize materials. Direct, coach, teach, and consult with team members, TRACK Engineers and Co-Ops as recognized chemical measurement expert. Execute functional requirements independent of Manager’s direction. Utilize skills for chemistry related problem solving. Support GM worldwide with build and warranty problems. Work with Platforms and Product Teams to develop chemical measurement technology necessary to support GM products worldwide. Significant understanding of chemical properties, chemicals, and interactions with component hardware, and sampling and analysis techniques to characterize materials. Direct, coach, teach, and consult with technical teams as recognized chemical measurement expert. Execute functional requirements independent of Manager’s direction. Utilize skills for chemistry related problem solving. Analyze, diagnose, and recommend/implement changes based on analytical lab test data. Design, develop, and implement improved industry tests to correlate and assure the highest quality products are available for GM customers. Demonstrated excellence in technical reports and presentations within and outside GM. ROI and patent submissions. Additional Job Description Requirements: BS in Chemistry, MS preferred. (Other degrees considered, e.g. Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biochemistry, Physics). Previous work experience within automotive, petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical or related industry. Experience with ASTM fuels chemical analysis test methods (ASTM D1298 Density, ASTM D381 Gums, ASTM D4815 Oxygenates, ASTM D5191 RVP, ASTM D5291 CHN, ASTM D5501 Ethanol/ Methanol, ASTM D5622 Oxygen in Gasoline, ASTM D6304 KF Water, ASTM D6730 DHA of Spark Ignition Engine Fuels, ASTM D7039 Sulfur XRF, ASTM D7371, ASTM D86 Distillation, D240 Heat of Combustion) Experience with Gas Chromatography, Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Instrumentation for Hydrocarbon speciation. Minimum 2-5 years analytical chemistry experience. Experience understanding chemical industries, product properties and manufacturing processes. Project management experience, including managing of multiple projects simultaneously. Work well both independently and on teams. Independently and collectively work with team to self-assign work and process work through lab. Expertise and/or detailed knowledge of chemical analysis techniques. Peer reviewed publications in SAE and other. Additional: The position is 5 days 8.5 hrs. daily M-F with ability to work in Warren / Pontiac on special occasions to assist with workload. Ability to work 4 ten-hour days (Wednesday thru Saturday) or (Sunday thru Wednesday) if workload requires Milford implementing a flexible work schedule.
