Primary Purpose The Analytical Research Associate II is responsible for characterization of small molecule organic compounds, particles, polymers, or other chemical materials, using analytical chemistry techniques and instrumentation. Uses their analytical chemistry expertise to actively contribute to early chemistry research efforts, technology development, and new product development. Develops analytical methods to test products for purity, function, and other characteristics. Writes analytical test methods and SOPs that can be used by other scientists. Correlates analytical testing data with product performance results to establish performance specifications for new products. Mandatory Qualifications – MS in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology with 0-1 years experience or BS with 2-3 years experience working in a scientific environment. – Hands on experience using advanced analytical instrumentation and techniques to analyze small molecule organic compounds or other chemical materials. – Ability to use analytical techniques such as HPLC, LC/MS, GC, UV/vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and NMR. – Ability to function independently in the analytical lab environment. – Ability to use analytical instrument software, Microsoft Office, and other data processing tools. Preferred Qualifications – Conducts routine and non-routine analysis of small organic molecules, particles, polymers, and other chemical materials. Demonstrates good judgement in selecting methods and techniques to solve issues at hand. – Manages and tracks their analytical experiments, including design, execution, results, and data, in a traceable manner, using electronic laboratory notebooks or other methods. – Evaluates and interprets results from analytical instruments and techniques, such as NMR, HPLC, LC/MS, UV/vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and luminometry. – Executes correlative research that ties product material attributes to analytical testing and results, such as impurity analysis and quantification, stability studies, and formulation. – Responsible for development, optimization, and fit-for-purpose characterization of analytical methods for transfer to quality control. Compiles data for documentation of test procedures. – Writes and reviews analytical test method documents that can be read, understood, and executed by other scientists. – Works together with other research scientists to conceptualize and develop new products. Supports early research and invention with advanced analytical studies and techniques. – Present scientific results and other reports to large and small groups within the company. – Operates all laboratory equipment according to training and SOPs. Investigates and understands the difference between equipment, process, and product related issues. – Be able to work in a collaborative, fast-paced, team environment. – Understand and comply with all elements of the PBI quality system appropriate for this position. – All employees must complete assigned duties in a safe manner, thoroughly familiarizing themselves with safety concerns, such as reading safety data sheets, wearing necessary protective clothing, including safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves, respirators, etc. All employees are required to attend regularly scheduled safety meetings. Responsible for monitoring safety practices of assigned area. Occasional Duties The marginal functions of this position have not been included. Mental Demands – Reading Must have college level reading and comprehension skill, with the ability to review and understand technical documents and scientific literature. – Writing Must have strong writing ability and the ability to communicate effectively. – Math Must have college level math skills, including calculus, algebra, and statistics. – Chemistry Must have college level of organic chemistry. – Other Must possess a very high level of attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Physical Demands – Must be able to move about the building and labs including climbing stairs. – Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. – Must be able to stand for long periods. – Good hearing, vision, and sense of smell is required. – Must be able to identify and distinguish colors. – Requires corrected vision for near (within 20 cm) and far (greater than 3m) activities. – Must be able to use a computer for long periods. Work Environment The primary work area is the Analytical laboratory, where there is the possibility of exposure chemicals that are used in the analysis of products. Because all processes are conducted according to safety and environmental procedures, exposures will be minimal and below OSHA levels as found in SDSs for the compounds. Proper protection (i.e., fume hoods, breathing air, gloves, safety glasses) will be required and provided. Exposure to cold, freezing, and sub-freezing temperatures may occur. Exposure to high temperature may occur. Exposure to noise from equipment used in manufacturing processes may occur. Judgment Decisions made by this position are critical to the success of the company. Projects can be delayed without the accurate and timely results provided by this position. Unnecessary financial expenditures could also result from judgement errors of this position. Latitude This job is expected to be performed with little supervision once proper training has been established and the task has been explained. Decisions about time management between multiple projects are left to this individual and will be driven by project deadlines. Supervisor assists with coordination between the individual and personnel in other departments on projects until successful relationship is established. Updates and progress of projects should be reported to the Analytical Scientist (or direct report). Budget Responsibility Requisitions for laboratory equipment, reagents, and project expenditures are expected. Expenditures above a predefined level will require laboratory manager approval.
