Application Development Engineer/Scientist NA-United States-Delaware-Wilmington Application Development Engineer/Scientist The Tedlar Fluoropolymer Products R&D group within the Photovoltaic and Advanced Materials (PVAM) business in Dupont is seeking a Research Engineer or Scientist for an Application Development position. Tedlar Fluoropolymer Products is an exciting and growing business supplying polyvinyl fluoride (PVF) polymer, films and coatings for innovative solutions in the Photovoltaic, Electronics, Transportation, Construction, and broad Industrial markets. The Application Development Engineer/Scientist will lead technical application development research to investigate and develop new applications for Tedlar products. This position will report to the Application Development Leader and will work closely with customers, Sales and Marketing Development Managers to drive application development projects and demonstrate value propositions relative to competitive products. This position s responsibilities include the generation of new ideas, product concept development, building prototypes, and testing those prototypes per industry standard methods. This position will play a pivotal role in continuing the development of the Tedlar application development capabilities in North America. The candidate will be part of a larger R&D group that is located at the DuPont Experimental Station, Wilmington, Delaware and will collaborate with peers in R&D, Technical Service, Sales & Marketing, value chain partners and customers. THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES This position s responsibilities include the generation of new product design ideas, the development of new product and process technologies for making films, and testing film prototypes per industry standard methods Your key responsibilities: * In close collaboration with Sales and Marketing, identify and work on opportunities for new product applications and product extensions in new market spaces. * Develop fundamental understanding of customer needs, processes, relevant industry standards, and required product performance characteristics. * Create prototypes and process solutions for customers using press lamination, vacuum lamination, nip roll lamination, thermoforming, and other standard forming operations that simulate customer capabilities. Coordinate with outside contract manufacturing as needed. * Conduct or coordinate property/performance testing of films, laminates, and/or prototype parts internally or through collaboration with external partners or laboratories. * Research and test competitive materials/products. * Research fundamental properties of PVF films and adhesives to support growing the existing technical body of knowledge around applications of PVF films. * Clearly communicate results to customers in oral or written format. Write technical literature and give presentations to explain product attributes and processing to both technical and non-technical audiences. * Engage in face-to-face customer interactions to support customers in their product/application development efforts. * Travel approximately 10% of the time within North America. * Master s Degree or equivalent experience in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Polymer Science, Material Science, Chemistry, or related field with at least 4 years of industrial experience. * Experience in application development, technical service, or research and development with focus on downstream applications of a product or technology. * Experience with use of adhesives and firm knowledge of adhesion science and technology is strongly desired. * Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on experience with laminate/composite processing technologies and polymer film handling is preferred. * Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects, meet deadlines, and work efficiently and independently to deliver strong technical results in a timely manner. * Ability to quickly develop understanding of new markets, customer needs and requirements, and industry standards and regulations through research and customer interactions. * Excellent oral and written communications skills, both internally and with customers. Fluent in English. * Strong relationship building, influence and collaboration skills are required.
