The Development Analytical Services (DAS) Scientist II takes day-to-day responsibility for OM and SEM instrumentation and provides support to R & D projects that generate new products, processes and understanding of commercial value to JM while building an understanding of the science involved. The incumbent will perform routine analytical analyses using the scanning electron microscopy and a significant amount of non-routine work using existing analytical procedures that serve to characterize the properties, function, or composition of catalytic materials or materials of catalytic interest. The incumbent supports JM through all aspects of catalytical material discovery and delivery including analytical analysis, liaise with internal customers, and support of JM processes and practices. Individual will have responsibility for managing projects from inception to close. Key Responsibilities – Prepares and evaluates samples (raw material powders, whole block analysis, washcoat scrapping of blocks, and sample aging, etc.) according to prescribed procedures for both routine and non-routine analyses. – Specific Job functions include performing SE/BSE imaging using SEM and Bright/Dark field STEM, interpretation of data and interacting with customers. – Alignment of the imaging column and the preparation of standards for the verification of the SEM. – Documenting and issuing reports on post-mortem analysis on field returned products utilizing EDX and WDS detectors to complete spectral-, line- and elemental mapping analysis. – Independently develops new methods for the analysis and characterization of formulated catalysts, their raw materials, and the supports on which they are placed. – Develop technical proposals, set technical objectives, and lead/conduct technical work in the area of microscopy relevant to automotive catalysis. – Prepares and reviews SOPs, test methods, scientific reports and other GMP/regulatory documentation (IATF 16949 and ISO 17025). – Mentors junior chemist and acts as an analytical chemistry resource for other staff. – To carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed. Are you the ideal candidate? – PhD in a relevant discipline with 0+ years technical experience, or a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with 0+ years technical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with 3+ years technical experience. – Technical expertise in Microscopy (Catalyst Characterization such as SEM, TEM, and OM) with demonstrated ability to apply knowledge and skills to solve related complex problems. – Knowledge of analytical techniques with skill in SEM, its operating software, and the related analysis and preparation procedures preferred. – Advanced knowledge of general and instrumental chemistry desirable. – Professional relationships with suppliers and colleagues to drive industry advances in key measurement systems desirable. – Knowledge of statistical concepts used to analyze data and assess measurement system performance desirable.
