* Bachelor s degree required. * At least ten years of increasingly responsible management experience in an academic, research environment, or health care. Prior management experience is essential. Must have a successful track record and proven skills in all phases of administration and operations strategic planning, development, finance, human resources, academic program development, and program monitoring and evaluations. Demonstrated leadership, communication, and analytic skills. Strong written and verbal skills are essential. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with all kinds of people and across all levels of an organization. Demonstrated ability to coach and inspire staff to provide unparalleled customer service. Familiarity with current sponsored research regulations. A record of leading a program in an academic or professional environment is highly desirable. Advanced degree preferred. Interpret University HR policies and practices for the department. Develop staffing and organizational plans and directly hire, manage and evaluate an administrative staff of five direct reports; and oversee hiring and management of ~35 temporary, term, and permanent employees * Act as the primary liaison between the Department and the administration of the Division of Science, FAS Human Resources, FAS Research Administration Services, the Office of Sponsored Programs, Risk Management and Audit Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Office of the General Counsel. * Oversee department finances, comprised of sponsored research funds ($5-6m), unrestricted funds, designated gifts, and endowments (cumulatively $5+m). Oversee research grant proposal submissions and all post-award activities, acting as Dean’s designate in review and approval process. Develop and approve annual operating budget reflecting department priorities and University guidance. * Serve as liaison to University Development to administer and manage terms of financial gifts benefitting the department. * Oversee and direct the support functions for faculty in all aspects of course design and implementation for the department s undergraduate and graduate curricula; facilitate access to laboratory and lecture spaces and resources. * Ensure effective implementation of and compliance with contractual obligations of the Harvard Graduate Student Workers Union (HGSWU) agreement. * Assist the Chair with faculty searches, recruitment, and start-up efforts. Support faculty committees in their implementation of searches, recruitments, offers, promotions, annual reviews and mentoring within the faculty ranks. * Oversee appointments and management of non-faculty positions. * Plan and allocate office and lab space for faculty, students, and staff. Work with FAS and University units (EH&S, FAS FMO) to support compliance in areas of material management, lab safety and facilities and equipment management. * Manage the physical plant, participate and advise in new facilities and building projects, and act as safety officer for department laboratories. * Provide Chair and faculty with program and activity planning and oversight, as needed. * Work with Harvard University Information Technology (HUIT) to ensure that adequate support is provided for department research, teaching and administration; manage the EPS web site. * Serve as a key departmental stakeholder in ensuring awareness of and compliance with Title IX requirements. * Support diversity, inclusion, and belonging for all constituencies in EPS.
