Responsibilities Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) for itive manufacturing of carbon-carbon composites. The RA will be responsible for conducting materials research on pyrolysis, carbonization, and graphitization. The RA will participate in equipment and experimental design. The position requires experience with analysis techniques (such as electron microscopy or X-ray analysis) that will allow process control parameters to be related to final part properties. Experience in the areas of materials science/metallurgy, machine design, and modeling will be advantageous for this work. It is expected that the researcher will be highly capable in coordinating work and collaborating with partners from other INL research groups and directorates, as well as other National Laboratory and industrial partners. You will be expected to: – Operate high temperature furnaces, including Spark Plasma Sintering equipment. – Work closely with industrial partners on pyrolysis/densification/carbonization of printed parts – Determine connections between process control parameters and printed material defects and microstructure – standard procedures and develop new procedures for tasks related to the project – Pursue funding opportunities to expand the work beyond the initial research program – Generate publications and presentations for scientific and engineering audiences. QUALIFICATIONS Required – PhD in Materials Science, Plasma Physics, or related discipline (to be completed prior to commencement of appointment). – Demonstrate oral and written communication skills in the English language. – Experience with analytical techniques such as electron microscopy (SEM or TEM), X-ray techniques (XRD, X-ray CT, etc.) or other techniques used to determine material and microstructural properties. – US Citizen Desired – Experience with experimental apparatus design – Experience with sintering and sintering theory – Familiarity with process control and control theory. – Familiarity with material characteristics and properties (metals, ceramics and/or piezoelectric materials).
