Interdisciplinary Research Scientist (Research Biologist/Research Chemist) Summary This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is located in the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), Office of Research, Division of Biochemical Toxicology which is responsible for planning and directing research specifically designed to define the biological mechanisms of action underlying the toxicity of products either regulated by or interest to, the product centers of the Food and Drug Administration. Responsibilities Plan, develop, coordinate and conduct highly specialized toxicological research aimed at fulfilling FDA regulatory science needs. Remain current with scientific literature and advancing research technology. Lead a team of Ph.D-level staff in the development, validation, and implementation of specialized mass spectral and nuclear magnetic resonance methods capable of addressing critical analytical research needs of NCTR and other Agency Centers. Responsible (Principal Investigator) for complex research protocols addressing crucial toxicological aspects of products regulated by the FDA. On-site Project Officer of an Interagency Agreement (IAA with the National Toxicology Program (NTP), managing an annual research budget of approximately $7M. Responsible for canvassing the FDA for toxicological questions/proposals/nominations where data-gaps need to be addressed with toxicological studies. Act as the FDA Liaison to the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Attend and represent the FDA at the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors meetings, and additional meetings of the NTP where the FDA might have interest in the deliberations or outcomes. Serve on committees and attends and makes presentations at professional meetings. Develops literature review and background information to supports the questions/proposals/nominations submissions to the NTP for consideration of study. Assist in the protocol design, to ensure regulatory impact is maximized. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications The position of Interdisciplinary Research Scientist (Research Biologist/Research Chemist) falls under the 0401/1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-15, you must meet either of the Basic Requirements AND the Specialized Experience as follows: Basic Requirements Research Biologist GS-0401-15 a. Have a degree from an accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. b. Have a combination of education and experience -Course equivalent to a major (in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position) as shown in ‘A’ above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR Research Chemist GS-1320-15: a. Have a degree from an accredited college or university with a degree in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR b. Have a combination of education and experience — course work equivalent to a major as shown in ‘A’ above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting either of the Basic Requirements stated above, applicants must ALSO meet the following experience: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade of GS 14 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the federal service planning, coordinating, conducting, managing and/or reporting biological/toxicological research projects related to animal studies evaluating toxicokinetics and/or toxicity of chemicals. Experience operating and maintaining mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy equipment and/or leading scientific interactions with other institutions.
