Job Description Duties Summary This position is located in the Office of Coordinated Outbreak and Response Evaluation Network (CORE). The function of the Office is to strengthen and streamline FDA’s approach to identifying, investigating, and responding to outbreaks of illness related to foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics, and to analyze and ress the root causes of those outbreaks to prevent future outbreaks. Responsibilities Reviews and analyzes highly complex data provided to response team during an outbreak. Provides expert opinion during outbreak response to enhance and further outbreak investigation. Collaborates with federal, state, local and non-governmental stakeholders to support an integrated food system. Conducts studies to determine source of outbreaks associated with food, dietary supplements, and cosmetic illness. Travel Required 25% or less – You may be expected to travel for this position. One-year probationary period may be required. Qualifications The position of Interdisciplinary Scientist falls under the 0401/0403/0415/1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet Time-in-Grade requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 11/09/2020. The Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or itional education under the microbiology series. In order to qualify for this Interdisciplinary Scientist, GS-0401/0403/0415/1320 position at the GS-13 level, you must meet the following: Basic Requirement: Biology, GS-0401 1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR 2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or itional education. Microbiology, GS-0403 1. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. Toxicology, GS-0415 1. Degree: toxicology; or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology. Chemistry, GS-1320 1. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR 2. Combination of education and experience – course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or itional education. AND Specialized Experience for GS-13: Applicant must possess one full year of specialized experience equivalent in complexity to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service: – Planning designing and executing outbreak response activities associated with food, dietary supplement and cosmetic-related illness; AND – Analyzing outbreak studies related to food, dietary supplement and cosmetic-related illness; AND – Preparing written documentation to support investigative findings.
