MATERIALS ENGINEER, ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING (PROCESS MONITORING) This role will be on the Materials Engineering team, supporting additive manufacturing. The materials engineering team supports materials across SpaceX, including material selection, testing, specification, characterization, and development of advanced materials and processes. You will collaborate with engineers on the materials, additive manufacturing, and non-destructive evaluation teams to develop and qualify techniques to monitor the printing process to detect process anomalies and defects in-situ. RESPONSIBILITIES: Collaborate with additive manufacturing team to investigate in-situ monitoring techniques and establish process and quality monitoring Carry out characterization and mechanical testing campaigns of printed materials to determine root cause defects responsible for early failures Demonstrate statistical validity of process monitoring technique(s) capable of detecting defects in additively manufactured hardware Work with vendors on qualification and implementation of new hardware and monitoring techniques Provide materials support for production issues and failure analysis of printed hardware Provide material selection support for improved performance and manufacturability of mission critical hardware Perform prototype process trials, materials analysis, and properties characterization BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor degree in materials engineering, metallurgy or similar engineering field Experience with metallic processing Experience with additive manufacturing PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: MS or PhD in materials science, materials engineering, or similar field OR 2+ years of related experience in an industry setting Familiarity with process monitoring techniques used in additive manufacturing or related fields Strong understanding of processing – structure – properties relationships in metallic materials Experience with non-destructive evaluation and application of those techniques to reduce risk in printed hardware Highly self-motivated and able to drive projects to successful completion on schedule Understanding of physical metallurgy of nickel, stainless steel, copper, and titanium alloys Excellent communication skills and ability to succinctly present recommendations Able to work well in an integrated collaborative team environment Experience in an aerospace materials and processes engineering role Demonstrated track record of success in a rapidly growing, fast-paced, and highly competitive environment Passion for advancing the commercial space industry and human spaceflight ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to work long hours and occasional weekends when necessary to support critical project deadlines ITAR REQUIREMENTS: To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
