Impossible Foods is looking for a motivated, mission-aligned person to join the Materials & Texture team. The overarching goal of the group is to create an arsenal of plant-based materials that enable the re-creation of any animal-based food products. We are looking for people who can contribute highly developed experimentalist skills, analytical thinking, and creative ideation to help us make daily progress towards that goal.
As a mechanical engineer, she/he will be expected to spend most of their time designing and building complex mechanical systems at the lab bench and at pilot scale. Good organization and documentation skills are as essential for this position, as curiosity and self-starting. She/he will be working closely with a scientist on the team who would serve as her/his advisor and career mentor. The scientist will take the lead in defining the engineering directions, and rely on the prospective engineer/scientist for spinning system design, implementation, and maintenance. At the same time, the engineer is expected to own contribute to liquid process development and pilot plant design. We take the professional development of R & D staff in the group seriously and aim for them to develop on an engineering career track within the R & D organization.
Design, source, and fabricate equipment for mixing, recovery, spinning, coating, and yarn manufacturing at lab and pilot scale for the production of plant-based meat mimicking animal tissue.
Manage external design and fabrication partners.
Review hardware and software specifications and design for process control systems.
Troubleshoot mechanical equipment and control system failure with root cause analysis followed by the implementation of engineering solutions.
Write engineering design documentation to enable process commercial scale-up.
MSc. or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Eng., Control System Eng., Material Eng., Fiber/ Textile Eng., Electrical Eng. or related fields.
3 to 5 years of engineering experience in the chemical or textile industry.
CAD and machining skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
The capability of working in teams and under high schedule constraints
Fiber and yarn handling design experience is a plus.
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a plus.
LabView, ABB, Siemens Programmable logic controller (PLC) or Distributed Control System (DCS) is a plus.
