JOB SUMMARY: The incumbent serves as a senior/lead inspector by conducting evaluations and inspections of biological high containment laboratories that contain select agents and toxins and infectious biological agents. DUTIES: As an Microbiologist (Inspector) you will: Conduct on-site inspections that include Biosafety Level (BSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, and Animal Biosafety Level (ABSL) 2, 3, and/or 4, facilities registered under 42 CFR 73 at various locations in the United States. Prepare written compliance reports of inspection findings based upon regulatory requirements by using nationally recognized safety standards as reference. Assess responses to inspection report findings and provides written updates as needed. Perform on-site inspections to ensure compliance with Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 42 CFR Part 73 and that safety standards detailed in the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL 5th Edition), and NIH Guidelines on Recombinant DNA Molecules are met. Communicate and promote the Division of Select Agents and Toxins providing technical assistance to Federal, State, Local, and Private Health Laboratories by counseling Responsible Officials, Corporate Officers, Biosafety Officials, Primary Investigators, laboratory scientists/technicians and others as needed. Provide oversite/leadership for an inspection team, or in the conception and formulation of productive ideas or approaches related to the application of the select agent regulations. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Basic Qualifications: A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent from an accredited college and/or university. OR B. Combination of education and experience – courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level of in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in conducting site assessments and inspections of biological high containment laboratories, identifying biosafety and security issues using nationally recognized biosafety standards, such as Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and developing guidance and procedures to improve biosafety and security in domestic laboratories.
