Job Details Full-time1 hour ago Qualifications – MongoDB – Point – Scripting – Cassandra – Communication skills – Doctoral degree Full Job Description Title: Molecular Data Scientist (Supporting NASA at Johnson Space Center) Molecular Data Scientist PURPOSE/FUNCTION The primary purpose of this position is to support the Life Sciences Data Archive (LSDA) project at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) under the Health and Human Performance Contract (HHPC). The successful candidate will serve as the Omics subject matter expert on the LSDA contractor team. The successful candidate will be responsible for using his or her understanding of the intent, scope, and outcomes of NASA-funded studies, primarily sponsored by the Human Research Program (HRP), in human biology, psychology, and physiology, to manage data and findings from primarily, but not limited to, Omics-related studies. Non-sensitive information about these studies will be accessible via a public website ( ) to both NASA personnel and the research community at large. To perform the functions of this position, the successful candidate must have education and experience in bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or related fields. The successful candidate will directly support customers both internal and external to NASA and will be required to maintain current knowledge on bioinformatics, technology, and industry related to the Omics field. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Support the creation of a scalable, extensible and durable omics data management ecosystem, in coordination with information technology (IT) and science management, and project management personnel; Support the development of workflows for data ingestion, validation, harmonization and analyses; Support the management and control of preprocessing pipelines of Omics data and setting of quality control requirements; Support the establishment of best practices in managing and serving data to the research community in a manner consistent with the broader research community; Provide expertise to support development of data submission agreements with principal investigators; Provide expertise to support development of metadata standards for omics data Provide expertise to support cataloging of Omics-related datasets submitted to the archive Respond to requests for data or information from researchers. Responding to requests for data or information may require collaborating with requesters and colleagues to understand the scope of the request and, and may require extracting data from the archive to create custom datasets. Other duties as assigned. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Advanced degree – PhD, preferably in biological sciences, information management, computer science, or analytical field – Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering – with a minimum of 5 years experience Proficiency in scripting tools, such as Python and R Proficiency working with large volumes of DNA, RNA and proteomic data sets Application of security requirements of controlled human research data Familiarity with genome assembly and annotation processes and notations DESIRED: Knowledge of quality standards for DNA/RNA/protein data Experience with high-level programming languages Use of NoSQL data management tools such as MongoDB, Cassandra, etc. Practical understanding of the Investigation-Study-Assay (ISA) Framework and common data model Demonstrated use of cloud-based services for data management and distribution Experience with the research model and interpreting data Knowledge of regulations and policies regarding human subjects and use of personally identifiable information (PII), e.g., Common Rule, Privacy Act Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to perform data analyses and to prepare technical reports, papers and presentations Experience implementing biological information resources according to federal government standards and requirements Proficiency with relational database tools and structured query language SKILLS/TRAINING REQUIRED: Exceptional ability to multitask Experience using collaborative applications, such as Point and OneNote Excellent oral/written communication and problem solving skills Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of colleagues, including scientists, clinicians, and managers Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications Ability to work successfully both independently and as part of a small or large team Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting Project management experience DESIRED: Familiarity with data management and data sharing coordination processes Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to perform data analyses and to prepare technical reports, papers and presentations Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 KBR is an equal opportunity employer.
