DESCRIPTION =========== The Center for Neural Repair in the department of Neurosciences studies the effects of combinatorial approaches in treating neurodegenerative conditions, spinal cord injury and neuroplasticity. Under supervision, incumbent will assist with providing histology and molecular biology support in a neurosciences research laboratory studying gene therapy in animal models of neurodegenerative disease. Primary responsibilities include: tissue sectioning, immunohistochemical staining, and microscopy; isolation and quantification of DNA and RNA from animal tissue by PCR, qPCR, and RT-qPCR analysis; rodent perfusion and surgical assistance. Maintain detailed records, perform rigorous data management, and collaborate effectively with a diverse laboratory staff. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ====================== * A Theoretical knowledge in biology or related field, as typically attained by a Bachelor s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Experience with sectioning of rodent tissue on microtome and cryostat. * Experience performing routine histology and immunohistochemistry, preparing staining solutions and buffers, mounting tissues on slides, and coverslipping. * Experience performing nucleic acid isolation and PCR, qPCR, and RT-qPCR assays. * Strong computer skills and experience with word processing, spreadsheets, and graphics software. Ability to learn new software for analysis of microscopic images. * Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills and ability to keep accurate records, prepare study reports, and write detailed protocols. * Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse laboratory staff, politely resolve issues, and communicate clearly. * Knowledge of basic lab safety requirements and procedures including EH&S regulations and methods for handling, clean-up, and waste disposal for biohazardous materials. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS ======================== * Experience with animal handling and rodent surgery, perfusion, and dissection. * Experience performing light, fluorescent, and confocal microscopy. * Experience in sectioning and histological staining of monkey and human tissue. * Experience performing RNAscope in situ hybridization. * Experience in general molecular biology techniques, including cloning and preparation of plasmid DNA, protein extraction, and western blot. * Scientific thinking skills and ability to independently troubleshoot assays, identify and correct problems, improve protocols, and train others. SPECIAL CONDITIONS ================== * Employment is subject to a criminal background check. * Must be willing and able to work with rats and mice in a research environment. * Must be willing to work on occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays.
