We are currently seeking a Pathology Research Specialist for the Research & Development team at our Slater, IA site. In this role you will conduct and deliver results of robust disease phenotyping assays and trials in support of disease resistance trait product development and placement. You will support primarily corn and soybean trait product development through provision of timely, high quality disease phenotyping results, inoculum, assay methodology development, and expertise on project teams. Accountabilities – Work independently and within teams to deliver high quality, timely plant disease data and technical support for wide array of development projects. – Develop and execute efficient disease efficacy studies, gathers and analyses data, prepares and communicates summaries and reports to stakeholders in effective and timely manner, including oral reports and presentations. – Innovate to improve existing assay methods and develop additional methods to broaden testing spectrum and enhance efficiency, in consultation with supervisor. – Plan and conduct experiments to test, develop, and deploy EDC tools, automated imaging and phenotyping solutions, in consultation with supervisor. – Ensure high quality cultures of various species and races of diseases are maintained in adequate supply. – May source and manage third-party testing including locating and contracting trial co-operators and sites. – Hire, train, and supervise contract seasonal technical workers. – Function as a technical member of the North America Trait Assessment Entomology Pathology team and may serve on multiple project teams, across Syngenta. Skills: – Bachelors Degree in biological science with 5+ years of related hands-on plant disease phenotyping experience. – 3+ years of applied experience in greenhouse/field plant disease screening programs, including successful disease culture production and maintenance. – Demonstrated ability to conduct successful and efficient plant disease assays – Basic fabrication skills needed to build, repair, and maintain equipment of trade and the ability to guide others in such fabrication – Ability to rapidly learn and effectively use proprietary systems information systems, such as SPIRIT and MINT. – Must be authorized to work for Syngenta in the United States without work authorization sponsorship Preferred Qualifications – Masters Degree in plant pathology with hands-on Corn or Soybean disease phenotyping experience is preferred.
