Full Job Description
The Point of Care Testing (POCT) Specialist I is responsible for monitoring daily POCT operation, surveillance, and reporting of POCT, including oversight, maintenance, quality control, calibration, proficiency testing, troubleshooting, and operator management. The POCT Specialist ensures that high-quality service is delivered. The POC Specialist I utilizes skills and judgment to perform a variety of technical functions, including maintenance of the POCT equipment, monitors instrument connectivity, and quality assurance functions, managing of POC inventory. The POCT Specialist I provides support on various shifts and multiple sites as needed and supports the Laboratory Mission. Participates in the continuous quality improvement process. The POCT Specialist I works closely with the POCT Coordinator to ensure quality service and regulatory compliance. The POCT Specialist I will project an image of professionalism in communication, appearance, and conduct.
Point of Care Testing:
The primary role of the POCT Specialist I is the support of the daily operations of Point of Care.
The POCT Specialist I also participates in maintenance, documentation, quality control, calibration, proficiency testing, troubleshooting, and operator management.
Responds to questions and requests received in POC.
Maintains a working knowledge of department standard operating procedures.
Participates in developing, reviewing, and revising POCT procedures as assigned.
Assist with the selection, distribution, and reporting of POCT proficiency surveys.
Monitors quality assurance functions performed by the POCT operators and review the QC documentation as required by policy. Responds to unacceptable results and takes appropriate action and notifies the POCT coordinator.
Performs instrument maintenance for POC equipment and reviews instrument maintenance records.
Demonstrates problem-solving skills which include actions, follow up, and documentation as appropriate.
Communicates with POCT Coordinator when problems arise.
Manages POCT supplies, including ordering, checking in, and maintaining inventory for POCT.
Assists Information Technology (IT) with the electronic transfer of results from the POCT equipment to the Hospital Information System (HIS).
Performs periodic audits of the connectivity systems and patient charts for data transmission and other information as required for POCT functions.
Generates various reports by using available software systems.
The POCT Specialist I prepares and updates in-service materials, trains operators, and documents competency according to federal and state regulatory guidelines.
Ensures that nursing educators, key operators, and operators are notified when POCT competency is due.
Notifies managers, educators, and key operators when POCT problems are identified.
Interacts with representatives and employees from other hospital departments and sites where Point of Care testing is performed to support and monitor the POCT process.
The POCT Specialist I drafts, maintains, and documents POCT training materials for initial and periodic in-services as required.
Maintains the POCT operator databases and sends notifications of competencies due.
Utilizes the on-line learning management system to document training and continuing education.
Responds to department updates by maintaining written procedures, training documents, and notifying the operators.
Organizes and prioritizes work as appropriate.
Is proficient in computer skills, including data entry using tables, charts, spreadsheets and Power Point.
Accommodates changes in workload within the department.
Takes and active role in staying CAP and DNV compliant.
During light workload situations performs itional tasks/duties for the department.
Demonstrates flexibility in accepting schedule and work assignments.
Projects an image of professionalism in communication, appearance and conduct.
Responds in a positive manner when discussing errors and offers suggestions for prevention.
Observes all hospital, laboratory and division policies and procedures, administrative, safety, infection control, attendance, HIPAA and standard precaution. Demonstrates responsibility for regulatory and corporate compliance.
Adapts to changes or unusual circumstances to promote cooperation and minimize disruption to working environment.
Responds in a calm and professional manner to inquiries and complaints.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience:
College degree of AA, BS, and BA.
Current California CLS (MT) or MLT.
Two years of Clinical Laboratory experience.
Skills or Other Qualifications:
Demonstrates excellent verbal & written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Ability to follow instructions and functions independently to solve problems and adjusts to a variety of tasks.
Has solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Experience in POCT
License and Certifications:
Current valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) license or valid Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) license is required
POCT Specialist I Certificate from AACC.
