Education – Doctoral degree Skills – C++ – Git – Ruby – Communication skills – Perl Organization and Job ID Job ID: Directorate: Energy and Environment Division: Electricity Infrastructure & Buildings Group: Buildings & Connected Systems Job Description The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)’s Building & Connected Systems (BCS) group performs applied research that drives energy and water efficiency, occupant productivity, and resilient operation of buildings and connected systems to provide economic, environmental, security, and societal benefits to the nation. The group is comprised of about 75 building research engineers, scientists, and program managers with diverse expertise in building mechanical systems, HVAC controls, data science and computer science, and core capabilities in building simulation, building performance evaluation and technology validation, building controls optimization and networking, and building data analytics. The BCS Group is seeking a Post-Doctorate Research Associate to support the development, upgrade, and use of PNNL’s large-scale building energy modeling infrastructure and associated analytical tools for the following research areas PNNL/DOE Residential and Commercial Prototype Building Models development in EnergyPlus and OpenStudio Development of EnergyPlus and OpenStudio and their associated tools National and regional building energy code upgrades, such as ASHRAE Standard 90.1, International Energy Efficiency Code, ASHRAE Standard 189.1 Energy impacts of building energy code compliance Resilience of building energy systems Grid interactive efficient building design and controls Urban-scale building modeling for building-to-grid research The term will be one year for position, at which point the candidate will be reviewed for potential conversation to a full-time employee. Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree in related field with 0-2 years of experience. Graduate degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences or related fields Solid background knowledge in building physics and building energy systems Experience in creating building energy simulation models in EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, or other similar software Strong programming skills in Python, Ruby, C++, R, or Perl Design or research experience in one or more of the building energy systems: building envelop, HVAC, lighting, controls, and service hot water. Experience in working with Git repository Development and implementation of containerized workflow for institutional high-performance computing or cloud computing Experience in conducting field or laboratory measurements of building energy systems and indoor environment parameters preferred Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong research skills to support research projects A collaborative approach to problem-solving in areas that do not have clear or established solutions or outcomes and the ability to work well with inter-disciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
