Further, Ag Bio applies this knowledge to solving practical problems related to: (1) management of pests in production agricultural systems, in natural resources and recreational environments, and in residential and public areas; (2) environmental quality, and (3) human and animal health. The Department encompasses the disciplines of entomology, plant pathology, and weed science – thus providing unique opportunities to ress critical issues that cut across disciplinary boundaries. Ag Bio focuses its teaching, research and outreach missions in four program areas each of which involves all three of the department’s disciplinary roots in entomology, plant pathology, and weed science. These programs are: 1) Genomics and Molecular Biology, 2) Ecology and Biodiversity, 3) Biology and Management of Invasive Species, and 4) Integrated Pest Management. Ag Bio emphasizes knowledge of pests and related organisms; the roles that they play in ecological, economic and social systems; and the application of such knowledge to developing economically and environmentally sound solutions for practical problems. Being interdisciplinary in nature, Ag Bio values cooperative and collaborative efforts with other units within the University, as well as other relevant entities in Colorado and beyond. Position Summary The Trivedi Lab at Colorado State University seeks a postdoctoral researcher in the area of microbiome/microbiota-plant interactions. Emphasis will be placed on the use of ‘omics’ techniques, statistical modeling, genome scale modeling, and microbial genetic approaches to understand the role of plant associated microbiome in sustainable agriculture production and disease resistance. The selected candidate will focus on studying the functional and structural basis of plant associated microbiome as they relate to agricultural systems in Colorado. The individual will study the coevolution of plant hosts with associated microbiomes and the role of microbiomes in improving crop yield and nutrient content while reducing environmental impact. This will consist of identifying the impact of microbiome dynamics on plant responses at molecular/community/phenotype level, by comparing plant-microbiome interactions at different stress conditions including drought and pathogen pressure. This project will require strong computational and analytical skills in analyzing large sequencing datasets and modelling beneficial host/microbiome interactions. The postion also requires conducting field and greenhouse experiments for hypothesis testing. There will also be opportunities to participate in teaching and grant writing. The position requires advising and training undergraduate and graduate students associated with the research projects. Required Job Qualifications – Candidates should have a completed Ph.D. degree in Microbial Ecology, Plant Pathology, Soil Microbiology, or other closely related field at time of application, a strong publication record (appropriate for career stage), and excellent communication skills – Demonstrated experience in working with ‘omics’ databases (in particularly high-throughput DNA or RNA- seq), bioinformatics and coding (knowledge of Python and/or itional languages are an advantage), and/or statistical analysis (R and other statistical software) as related to microbiome analysis – Broad understanding of microbial physiology and the interactions of microbes with the environment. – Experience with microbiome related studies, DNA extraction, next generation sequencing, functional metagenomics, and/or bioinformatics – Experience in both lab and field experimentation – Willingness to involve students in research is also important – Research productivity as demonstrated by first-author publications Preferred Job Qualifications – Proven ability to ‘omics’ techniques in the area of plant-microbiome interactions. – Experience with data analysis using advanced statistics mainly using Python and R based multivariate statistics, modelling and network analysis toolboxes. – Experience in genome scale modeling. Essential Duties Job Duty Category Research Duty/Responsibility The successful candidate will conduct experiments in order to understand how plants control their microbiome and how plant associated microbes contribute to plant growth and development. The individual will work with soil and plant samples and gather next generation sequencing data on microbial communities to study metagenomes. The individual will advanced bioinformatics and statistical analysis to model host/microbiome interactions. The individual will also be responsible for setting up greenhouse and growth chamber assays to evaluate the microbiome dynamics in response to biotic/abiotic stressors. This project requires strong molecular biology and bioinformatics skills. In ition, the individual will be expected to write manuscripts and give presentation using the results from these studies. This work is being doing in order to develop a better understanding of the role of plant associated microbiome in sustainable agriculture production and disease resistance. Percentage Of Time 75 Job Duty Category Supervision Duty/Responsibility The individual will be expected to mentor undergraduate students who will assist on the project. The will do this through active mentorship and demonstration of laboratory and data analysis techniques. This is done to provide the post-doc an opportunity to build mentoring skills as well as provide an undergraduate student the opportunity to work in a research lab.
