Postdoctoral Fellow in the Social Sciences Title Postdoctoral Fellow in the Social Sciences School Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department/Area Sociology Position Description The Department of Sociology seeks applications to fill a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the social sciences, with a focus on crime, punishment, and social change over the life course. Salary and research funds will be provided, along with the opportunity to draw on the resources of a major research project directed by Professor Robert Sampson. Available starting in the winter or spring 2021 for one year, with the possibility of renewal for another year (or if starting in winter 2021, some portion of the year to align with the traditional July and August start dates in academia). Remote to start but once on-campus activities resume the expectation is for in-person engagement, with office space provided. Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. If hired prior to the completion of the degree, candidates will be hired as a Predoctoral Research Fellow. We seek self-driven, creative thinkers with strong quantitative and interpersonal skills who are able to be the key organizational point of contact with major survey and research firms, as well as state agencies. The successful candidate will serve a dual role as project manager and research analyst for a long-term study of crime and criminal justice contact. Overall, it is expected that the postdoctoral fellow will engage in high-level research management and be involved in the analysis and publication on projects currently underway or planned. He or she would also be encouraged to maintain an independent set of research interests. The roles will be supported by a deep array of resources at Harvard University, and no teaching is required. Qualified applicants must have a PhD degree, in sociology, criminology, geography, urban studies, planning, public policy, psychology, statistics, or a related field; others will be considered based on individual fit with the research mission. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and is benefits-eligible. Basic Qualifications Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. If hired prior to the completion of the degree, candidates will be hired as a Predoctoral Research Fellow. Additional Qualifications Experience or comfort with interdisciplinary scholarship strongly recommended, as is proficiency in data management and commitment to the principles of open research. Must possess strong communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills. Experience with survey design or data collection, data linking, GIS, and longitudinal data analysis a plus.
