SunIRef:Manu Position Purpose To support ongoing research in the van der Meer Lab. Description Required Qualifications – Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience Required Qualifications – Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Skills and Knowledge Ability to learn quickly from direct mentoring, from observation, and from self-reflection. Competent in laboratory methods, procedures and techniques related to behavioral and neural recording experiments in rodents. Experience with/willingness to learn computer programming in MATLAB or Python. Good judgment in monitoring data quality. Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records. Communicates respectfully with a diverse community. Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment. Good organizational and time management skills. Minimum Experience Six months of laboratory/research experience working with rodents. Continuation is based upon available funds. This position is a 12-month term position. Key Accountabilities Description Research/Experiments Performs rodent experiments, including but not limited to: behavioral training, stereotaxic surgery, and recording of neural signals. Constructs electrodes and optical fibers for neural recording. Processes collected data using established analysis pipelines. Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities. Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods. Percentage Of Time 70% Description Laboratory Management Monitors work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards. Manages stock levels of lab consumables and helps organize lab space. Assists in the maintenance of rat/mouse colonies including handling and weighing of animals, managing breeding pairs, and entering data into spreadsheets. Percentage Of Time 20% Description Records and protocol management Maintains laboratory records of procedures. Applies sound data management procedures, such as following naming conventions and backing up acquired data to secure locations. Helps manage lab protocols. Percentage Of Time 10% – Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others. – Performs other duties as assigned.
