HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION The Research Associate performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The Research Associate performs assigned laboratory duties in support of a variety of conservation research, endangered species propagation, and diagnostic activities that are paired with field-based conservation programs. This position reports to the Research Coordinator will work with both Population Sustainability and Conservation Genetics to assist with ongoing research projects in both groups. WHAT YOU WILL DO Perform a variety of laboratory or diagnostic duties, across several focal species including but not limited to giraffe, spectacled bears, leopards and various primates. Collect, collate, maintain, process, and analyze biological samples Design and validate assays in the lab for deployment in the field Prepare, arrange, and maintain records for sample and/or animal shipments Collect, record, and analyze data utilizing spreadsheet and database systems Document, file, and maintain electronic laboratory notebook records Conduct a variety of assigned research activities Assist in the preparation of data and related reports for presentation and/or publication Management of databases; Biobanking of genetic material; and Conducting molecular genetic work such as DNA extractions from various sources of genetic material, PCR for sex determination and fragment analysis, gel electrophoresis, genomic library preparation and sequencing in next-generation sequencing platforms, including nanopore sequencing based platforms. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is seeking an individual who is inspired to be a part of an organization that is committed to protecting wildlife around the globe. The applicant must have the ability to work independently but also take direction, multitask, work as part of a team, and follow through on assignments in a timely fashion. This position requires excellent attention to detail and good record-keeping with the ability to neatly organize high volumes of samples/lab supplies and electronic data. JOB EXPERIENCE Experience and/or certification in conducting genomics-based laboratory research Outstanding knowledge on laboratory procedures and safety practices is required EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in biology, evolution, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or related fields, or equivalent research experience. Valid California driver license in good standing SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Methods and equipment used in molecular genetics and genomics in the laboratory Data and record keeping skills, including prior experience with electronic laboratory notebooks.
