Full Job Description

Are you inspired to be a part of an organization committed to protecting wildlife around the globe? San Diego Zoo Global is a mission-based, non-profit wildlife conservation organization with two world famous front doors where we unite our passion for wildlife, expertise in wildlife care, and conservation science to save species from the brink of extinction. Our commitment is to provide visits to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park as opportunities to learn about and engage with best-in-class conservation work, and how that work is changing outcomes for wildlife everyday.

HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Research Associate will support San Diego Zoo Global’s mission of saving species worldwide by performing laboratory activates. This position reports to the stem cell Scientist in Conservation Genetics.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

The Research Associate will work in the Conservation Genetics group at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research. The Research Associate will perform lab work related to stem cell biology of endangered species including cell culture, microscopy and gene expression analysis of samples as well as maintaining databases and laboratory equipment.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

The Research Associate will be a part of the Conservation Genetics Group at the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research working on the stem cell team.
The position will assist with the development, maintenance, differentiation and cryopreservation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from the living cell collections of the Frozen Zoo, currently focusing on the northern white rhino. There will also be an emphasis on characterization of these lines through gene expression (RNAseq and quantitative PCR), immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry. Work will progress into development of differentiation protocols for the reproductive pathways to these stem cells to genetic rescue.

Applicants must have knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and equipment, excellent skills in methods of sterile technique and laboratory safety practices. Hands on experience in cell culture including culturing and freezing somatic and/or stem cells is required. Knowledge of reprogramming fibroblasts into iPSCs is a great asset for entering this position. Proficiency with PCR, especially quantitative PCR, and subsequent gene expression analysis is also required. Experience in next generation sequencing (NGS) is desirable, including sample extraction (DNA/RNA and associated quality control: i.e. PFGE, BioAnalyzer and Qubit) and library preparation. Analysis experience using R and other bioinformatics software is beneficial.

The applicant must have the ability to take direction, follow through on assignments and work independently, but working as part of a team is essential. Schedule flexibility and the ability to work on weekends and holidays is also required. The applicant must also be adaptable to a dynamic workload, have critical thinking skills, and be neat and well organized with laboratory data. The ability to interact and discuss the project with non-science audiences is also necessary.
