We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist to join the DIII-D plasma boundary group in the area of Advanced Materials Evaluation. With general supervision and limited review, this position is focused on simulation scoping and experimental execution of plasma-materials interactions studies on DIII-D. The work may involve conducting experiments, analysis, simulation and diagnostic development. Duties And Responsibilities – Conducting simulations and performing experiments on the DIII-D tokamak focused on improved understanding of low-Z material migration, and leading the conceptual development of new materials and wall geometries. – Modeling of incident particle and energy fluxes to the DIII-D main chamber walls and the corresponding erosion/re-deposition, surface evolution, and fuel retention in advanced materials. – Investigating the interplay between high-Z materials and divertor closure on advanced confinement regimes in DIII-D, including the effects of surface temperature and material mixing. – Supports spectroscopic and collector probe diagnostic measurements on the DiMES system and the planned WITS facility. – Participates in experimental campaign initiatives, including setting broad research vision and strategy for plasma-materials interactions research. – Publishes in recognized scientific journals, presents work at national level, pursues research projects, and works with and provides support to the wider DIII-D team in the above topic areas. – Directs the activities of designers, technicians and may direct the activities of less experienced professional staff. – Responsible for observing all laws, regulations, and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company. Expected to work in a safe manner in accordance with established operating procedures and practices. – Performs other duties as assigned or required. Job Qualifications – Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; four or more years experience with a Bachelors degree, and two or more years experience with a Masters degree. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education. – Must have; (1) a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of scientific principles, concepts, theory, and practice; (2) experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; (3) experience working with tokamaks including programming discharges to achieve physics goals; and, (4) have original work(s) published in professional scientific journals. – Must possess the ability to; (1) understand new concepts quickly; (2) apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, (4) determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems. – Must have strong communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one scientific area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks. – Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
