The USRA Science and Technology Institute (STI) is seeking a Visiting Scientist. The candidate will work on the physics of accretion onto compact objects, mainly neutron stars. The candidate will analyze/interpret data from all satellite-based high-energy observatories with special emphasis on Fermi/GBM and NICER data to analyze spectral and timing behavior of the pulsating sky and the prompt emission of explosive events such as Gamma-ray Bursts. The candidate will work together with the NICER and GBM teams. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: – Data analysis and publication in peer-reviewed journals – Regular duties to cover GBM observations of transients and pulsating sources – Prompt reports of GBM results available for the community – Other job-related duties as assigned Education: – PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a closely related discipline – Experience in Astronomy and Astrophysics with detailed understanding and knowledge of X-ray and Gamma-ray data analysis. Experience: – The position requires proven experience in X-ray and Gamma-ray data analysis and a demonstrated record of research excellence. – 2-6 years of post-graduate experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: – X-ray/Gamma-ray data reduction and interpretation of timing and spectral results – Experience in peer-reviewed publications process – Programming experience for data reduction – Oral and written communication skills Attributes: – Communication – Technologically Competent – Desire to keep learning – Organized – Reliable – Punctual – Flexible – Ethical – Patient – Focused – Courteous – Professional Technology: – Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), its applications and image processing software. – Knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware and software, including applications. – Proficient use of standard office equipment. Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Computer keyboard use for large time spans each day will be a significant part of this position. This is largely a sedentary role.
