Job Description The Vaccine Process Development (VPD) department in West Point, PA is seeking a highly motivated scientist/engineer to join their downstream process development team in support of our company’s expanding vaccine pipeline. The VPD downstream group develops purification processes for the manufacture of vaccine candidates encompassing a diverse range of biomolecules, including viruses, recombinant protein subunits, nucleic acids, and polysaccharide-protein conjugates. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying sound scientific understanding and engineering principles to develop, scale-up, and transfer downstream processes for clinical and commercial manufacture. The position involves working in a highly inter-disciplinary environment as a scientific contributor under the supervision of a senior scientist. The scientist is expected to work well in teams, including cross-functional collaboration with other bioprocess functional areas. The successful candidate will have a background in biological science or biochemical engineering and expertise in hands-on laboratory work. Experience in biomolecule purification using techniques such as ultrafiltration, chromatography and centrifugation is required. Experience in related analytical methods will be considered as a positive factor. To support technology transfers, knowledge of cGMP practices is also desired. The candidate should be self-motivated, well-organized, have strong problem-solving skills, and be able to work well in a dynamic team environment. They will be expected to communicate the results of their work in both verbal and written formats. In addition to the core responsibilities outlined above, the candidate will be expected to keep careful notes, comply with all required training, and maintain focused attention on laboratory safety. Education BS/MS in Chemical Engineering or Biological Sciences, with a technical background in downstream process development of biological molecules. Required Experience And Skills – Minimum 3 years (or 1 year with MS degree) experience in preparative purification of biological molecules. – Technical background in downstream unit operations such as chromatography, membrane filtration, and common biochemical analytical techniques. – Ability to execute and interpret laboratory experiments in fulfillment of assigned program objectives in a manner that meets quality and timeline expectations. – Well-developed organizational, record-keeping, and problem-solving skills. – Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Preferred Experience And Skills – Downstream process development experience for large-molecule vaccine candidates such as live viruses, VLPs or bioconjugates, including process scale-up. – Understanding of established safety practices for live virus vaccines including Biosafety Level 2 operations. – Knowledgeable in downstream unit operations such as ultrafiltration, normal-flow filtration, chromatography, and centrifugation. – Knowledge of analytical methods such as HPLC, light scattering, electrophoresis, and spectroscopy. – Communication of scientific information through oral presentations and written documents. – Familiarity with GxP principles and regulations.
