We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Scientist to work within our Magnetic Fusion Technologies (MFE) group in support of the diagnostic development program in San Diego, Ca. This position under general directions with limited review will apply innovative approaches to design and implement optical measurement systems, with an emphasis on laser and imaging applications. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: – Develop and improve optical diagnostic techniques; including design, modeling, fabrication, integration, testing and troubleshooting of the system components. – Devise new approaches in the design, analyses and test of new diagnostic components and systems. This requires familiarity with electromagnetic and light transmission theories, and the use of numerical simulation tools. May develop and/or perform computational modeling of scientific phenomena. – Develop and document data processing and analysis algorithms. – Document all designs, analyses, test results and conclusions, and communicate results to staff and community via technical presentations and publications. – Maintain a general knowledge of advanced diagnostics. Leverage the progress in laser and imaging technologies to develop new measurement approaches. – Work with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop requirements for diagnostic systems and components. – Provide direction to engineering, design and technical staff. May lead a team of moderately experienced professional staff. – Perform other duties as assigned. Job Qualifications: – Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a related Bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a related Masters degree, and two or more years of experience with a PhD. Equivalent scientific experience may be substituted in lieu of education. – PhD in plasma physics, remote sensing or energy fields is highly desirable. – Strong research record developing and applying quantitative optical diagnostic techniques in refereed publications and professional meeting presentations. – Experience designing and implementing diagnostics in industrial or challenging environments – Must have; (1) a complete understanding of scientific concepts, principles, codes, and theory; (2) experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, (3) an expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in laser, light generation, transmission and detection. – Must possess the ability to; (1) develop and communicate new concepts; (2) apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; (3) organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, (4) determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems. – Experience with programming languages (Matlab, Python, APIs), optical and mechanical design software (OpticStudio, SolidWorks), modeling software (Comsol, Quickwave, Ansys) or other similar software packages. – Must have strong communication, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team. – Able to perform complex tasks in one or more scientific areas; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and, lead a team of moderately experienced professional employees on single component projects. – Proficient in Windows and Mac operating systems; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. – Able to work extended hours and travel as required. ‘,’employmentType’:’Full-Time Salary’,’identifier’:’31613BR’,’qualifications’:’ – Typically requires a Bachelors degree, Masters degree or PhD in a scientific or related technical field and progressively complex scientific experience as follows; six or more years of experience with a related Bachelors degree, four or more years of experience with a related Masters degree, and two or more years of experience with a PhD.
