Senior Chemical Vapor Deposition Engineer (CVD) Location: North America, USA, Romeoville Ref: JOHNCRANENA00766 Division: John Crane Job Function: Engineering Job Description Reporting to the General Manager, the John Crane Diamond Senior Engineer is responsible for leading, managing, and supporting the following activities: – Engineering projects – Production process improvements – Technical leadership in CVD – New product development Key to this role is the leadership and oversight of the CVD processing details. This role is responsible for John Crane Diamond’s engineering support and product development staff and needs to be comfortable working in a dynamic environment. You will become a subject matter expert (SME) in everything related to John Crane Diamond’s products and core technologies leading to enhanced product performance and exceptional customer support. You will need to act as a liaison for senior leadership and the rest of the organization to ensure effective communication throughout. Duties & Responsibilities – Leading the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) operation, it’s consistency, and new product and process development related to diamond deposition – Having in-depth knowledge of company products, their methods of manufacturing, and their relationship to alternative materials – Leading the characterization and Quality Control efforts related to thin-film processing – Ensuring products meet or exceed company and market expectations – Planning for operational capacity expansion to meet market demand – Working closely with John Crane’s global engineering and R & D teams to optimize the expansion of the technology – Providing recommendations and justifications as needed to support CAPEX planning – Providing support and expertise to sales teams as applicable – Ensuring agreements with customers are renewed in a timely manner and they fulfill requirements of their contract (in conjunction with sales team) – Managing performance of team against agreed-upon criteria and metrics, including individual and group KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) – Involved in recruitment and development of John Crane Diamond personnel – Ensuring annual reviews of subordinates are completed with direct reports in a timely manner The Individual – BS degree in Material Science, Physics, Engineering or a related field (MS or PHD is a Plus) – At least 5 years thin-film experience, ideally with strong CVD background – Thin-film characterization – CVD Process development experience – Familiarity with thin-film process controls – Experience with ceramic-films – Experience with the manufacturing of CVD equipment (Preferable) – Comfort with data analysis (Preferable) – Experience with SPC and MVSPC (Preferable) – Familiarity with diamond (preferable) – Familiarity with thin-films for wear-resistance (Preferable) – Background in tribology (Preferable) – Able to communicate technical issues clearly to people with less familiarity with the technology About Smiths At Smiths we apply leading-edge technology to design, manufacture and deliver market-leading innovative solutions that meet our customers’ evolving needs, and touch the lives of millions of people every day.
