Research_Scientist_/_Senior_Research_Scientist Position Overview: Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting new independent marine research institute that is addressing critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. Our science strategy has three focus areas (1) Biomedicine & Biotechnology, (2) Ecosystem Function & Health and (3) Fisheries & Aquaculture. GMGI is looking for a Scientist or Senior Scientist with experience in marine genomics and bioinformatics to join our research team. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as a driving force in advancing innovative research projects using novel molecular or computational approaches with a strong publication record and a history of successfully awarded grants. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in comparative genomics and methylomics. We will consider scientists at all career levels, but encourage applications from scientists with established research programs that fit GMGI s mission. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build multi-disciplinary teams of collaborators from academia and industry. Responsibilities: Initiate new research projects aligned with our science strategy genomics and computational approaches to address important questions in marine organisms or the marine environment with applied outcomes Develop novel approaches for comparative genomics and comparativ methylomics across a broad phylogenetic range Identify and implement emerging technologies and/or computationa approaches where appropriate Establish collaborations with leading academic and industry grou achieve research objectives Contribute to the development or improvement of bioinformatic an pipelines for large genomic data sets for a variety of research projects Publish results in leading scientific journals and present resul scientific conferences Take a primary role in identifying new funding opportunities and writing Assist in fund-raising efforts for the institution, give present to stakeholders, donors and general audiences Contribute to GMGI s commitment to create a science communi Ann Supervise research staff and interns across the full spectrum of from field to bench to computational analysis Qualifications: * PhD in Genomics, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Marine Biology, or a related field * Background in applying genomic approaches to marine-related questions Exceptional skills in bioinformatics and analysis of large seq data sets Proficient with the Linux environment and knowledge in command software, shell scripting and applying scripts of commonly used languages for biological data analysis (e.g. Perl, Python, R) * Strong publication record and a capacity to conduct innovative, high- quality research * History of success as a driving force in research projects with a track record of successfully awarded grants * Self-starting, independent, creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills * Excellent communication and teamwork skills * Demonstrated record of leadership, integrity and flexibility Enthusiasm and commitment to GMGI s mission for science a education This position will report to the Science Director.
