The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for the coordination and execution of product development and commercialization efforts for Beverage and Baby product initiatives including but not limited to new products, line extensions, cost savings, innovation, and quality improvements. Your approach should include a practical application and understanding of existing ingredients /new technologies and the identification and innovative creation of new and unique products which achieve business goals while ensuring that objectives, product design and timelines are met. You will be expected to respond resourcefully to new demands and challenges throughout the product development & commercialization process (including benchtop, pilot plant, and plant trials to create prototypes for consumer testing, etc.) as well as implement best practices. The Senior Research Scientist possesses and demonstrates a solid understanding of food science, strong supply chain knowledge, expert assembly and manufacturing best practices, technical principles and experimentation, project management skills, product design, financial savvy, and highly effective communication. You will provide technical leadership in execution of new products and processes in an environment that fosters innovation and calculated risk taking . In this role you will report to the Senior Manager of Research and Development Essential Responsibilities Will Include But Not Be Limited To – (50%) Leads the identification, assessment, and validation of formulations from benchtop through commercialization. – (15%) Ensures all proper documentation is done accurately and project milestones are on schedule. – (15%) Conducts and leads assessment and capability studies, product startups/commercialization and provides on-site support to Plant Operations and Quality Assurance for new products, productivity, and quality programs. – (10%) Fosters an innovation culture by continually introducing consumer-centric ideas and product concepts for new products, quality improvements, and productivity. – (5%) Creates, designs, supervises the development of new experimental protocols/best practices required to validate product concepts and prototypes. – (5%) Independently directs the activities of outside vendors including ingredients and services. Job Complexity – Interact and communicate effectively with Senior Management as well as Plant Management. – Handle multiple projects concurrently and prioritize them based on business objectives and timelines. – Problem-solving skills with ability to identify, interpret and analyze the correct data, and provide detailed direction to development projects. – Sustain a high level of competence and professionalism in a dynamic business environment. – Demonstrated flexibility and ability to react rapidly to changes in direction. – Active knowledge and understanding in areas beyond Product Development including Process and Package Development, QA, Project Engineering, and thorough understanding of Marketing needs and financial concepts (costing, budgets, etc.). – Work with a team and lead cross-functional technical team in achieving the results needed. – Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence decisions within the cross functional team (Marketing, Operations/Supply Chain, Engineering, Manufacturing, QA, Process Development and Package Development) and externally with partners (suppliers, Campbell’s Center of Excellence, R & D, co-manufacturers). We Are Looking For The Following Abilities And Skills – Bachelors or higher in Food Science or related field with Product Development emphasis. – Years’ Experience Required: 6 – 8 + years of related experience with a preferred consumer-packaged goods background; experience with shelf stable foods unit operations in beverages or baby foods is preferred. – Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to details, good communications, and interpersonal skills. – Passion for food science, product development, ingredient technology, and consumers as it relates to innovation for new products, line extensions, and productivity opportunities. – Ability to think beyond his or her own (R & D) function to consider the organization and its purpose holistically. – Can determine with guidance the root cause of a problem and execute effectively on solutions. – Ability to work with support groups and to function effectively in a team environment. – Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, communication, and interpersonal skills. – Self-starter, able to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. – Ability to multi-task and work comfortably in a high-pressure environment. Working Conditions – Anticipated travel of up to 25% to locations which may include the following: World Headquarters (WHQ) Office, Research Kitchen, Pilot Plant, and Manufacturing Plants (Campbell Soup Company (CSC), co-manufacturers and vendors). – A significant portion of the job is in the thermal production environment; thus, the work exposes the employee to heat and hot food products, coolers, and freezers requiring the use of personal protective equipment. – Ability to walk or stand up to three-quarters of the workday. – Physical ability to handle weights of up to approximately thirty pounds. – Handle allergens including diary, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, eggs and other food ingredient chemicals and allergens while wearing appropriate PPE. – Willingness and ability to taste and evaluate a wide range of food products and ingredients.
