We are hiring for a Program to characterize and control microbial physiology in order to build the outstanding products that enable our mission. To meet this goal, we seek a Senior Scientist who is profoundly curious, collaborates broadly and easily draws connections between disparate fields. You will lead the effort to understand and improve IF’s microbial platforms. In this role, you define fundamental, relevant aspects of microbial biochemistry and physiology; extend and improve databases that link microbial strains to final products made from them (with technical support); mentor junior colleagues; and interact widely throughout the network of Impossible colleagues to access a broad range of technical expertise.
Lead: define, discuss, critically evaluate and revise conceptual questions for this effort;
Select and measure relevant microbial features to include macroscopic properties, microscopic structure, gene expression, enzymes and small molecule profiles;
Test microscale findings at kilogram scale using common methods to isolate microbial biopolymers and small molecules (eg, mechanical disruption, clarification and filtration);
Aggregate, contextualize and summarize data. We are deeply committed to transparency, accessibility, accurate communication and the proper deployment of caveats.

PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology or related fields;
A very deep interest in protein biochemistry and microbial physiology;
The ability to keep our mission top-of-mind while zooming into and back out of details and reshuffling priorities when we learn;
The aim to communicate clearly and to continually improve your ability to visually display quantitative information;
Perseverance. Our work is meaningful, highly innovative and fascinating – but not always straightforward;
The ability to wrangle and communicate data from your work and that of the extended team, minimally to include some programming (Python preferred).
