The Zoo cares for rare flora and fauna here and around the world, including planting over 25,000 trees a year in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Senior Veterinary Technician Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is seeking applications for the position of Senior Zoo Veterinary Technician, reporting directly to the Zoo s Staff Veterinarian. This is an exciting opportunity to join a respected and growing Zoo and work in a new veterinary hospital and animal commissary opened in November 2019. The Senior Veterinary Technician position at the Naples Zoo will be responsible for coordinating medical procedures with the Zoo s veterinarian and managing the hospital and the technician staff to achieve smooth daily operations while providing the highest standard of animal care. This is a leadership role that requires the knowledge and ability to perform all duties of the Veterinary Technician along with the additional duties below. Essential Duties: * Perform all essential duties of Veterinary Technician including, but not limited to, setting and cleaning up procedures, running medical procedures, processing in-house laboratory samples, sending specimens to outside laboratories, filling prescriptions, sterilizing instruments, cleaning facilities, etc. * Perform and/or schedule maintenance on all veterinary equipment: * Dental machine * Anesthesia machines (large and small animal) * Autoclave * Blood analyzers * Storz endoscopes * Ultrasound unit * Digital radiology equipment * Contact and coordinate with vendors for sample submissions: * Blood/urine/feces * Tissue * Necropsy/histopathology * Hay * Maintain pharmaceutical and medical supply inventory: * Controlled drug log in both paper copy and ZIMS * Expired drug disposal and replacement * SDS logs * Vendor accounts * Manage quarantine facilities and hospitalized animal residents: * Make enclosure preparations for incoming and outgoing animals. * Clean and maintain facilities and equipment. * Work with animal care staff to establish husbandry, diet, enrichment, and training plans for incoming animals. * Perform veterinary care of quarantined or hospitalized animals. * Implement up to date protocols for disinfection/sterilization of equipment, instruments, surgery, facilities in general. * Write SOPs for quarantine area, lab tests, equipment usage, and all technician-led activities. * Maintain animal record keeping for both electronic and hard copy files. * Enter records into ZIMS software (anesthesia, lab results, necropsy, clinical notes, etc). * Manage medical training program for a variety of animals: * Manage training priorities from veterinarian and animal area supervisors. * Schedule training sessions with keeper staff. * Maintain records of training sessions, goals, and progress with each animal. * Delegate to staff and perform veterinary prescribed treatments. * Assist with training veterinary technician, veterinary interns/externs, and volunteers. * Report animal illness, maintenance, safety, horticulture, or other needs to appropriate staff. * Assist in animal procedures including translocations, immobilizations, crating, and veterinary procedures. * Respond to and assist in guiding the resolution of emergency situations within the zoo. * Perform other duties as assigned. Additional Skillset: * Knowledge in animal capture and restraint protocols and equipment. * Knowledge of husbandry requirements and the prevention of zoonotic diseases. * Knowledge of operant conditioning and animal training. * Knowledge and observation of safety protocols and reporting protocols. * Knowledge of AZA, USDA, and DEA standards. * Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via speaking and writing. * Possession of strong interpersonal skills. Experience Required Qualifications: Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited program. At least 3 years experience as a veterinary technician working in a zoological facility or equivalent is preferred. Florida certificate of veterinary technician (CVT) obtained within 90 days of hire.
