Requisition Id4539 Purpose: The Biodiversity and Sustainability section within the Environmental Sciences Division, , at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), , is seeking a Staff Scientist position in radiation dosimetry research. We seek a colleague with research interests in exploring radiation effects on humans using advanced simulation and computational approaches for radiation dose modeling and assessments. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who bring unique skills to the Center for Radiation Protection Knowledge’s () existing expertise and, in addition to contributing greatly to ongoing programs, can develop new research programs in radiation dosimetry. ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with over 60 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation’s leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources. Our scientists conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies. Major Duties/Responsibilities: The selected candidate will have responsibility for collaboratively leading research in these areas: – Computational dosimetry using traditional and new-age anthropomorphic phantoms – Biokinetic modeling of essential substances and xenobiotics in the human body – Compilation and evaluation of radionuclide decay data and the construction of environmental source terms – Dose reconstruction and radiological assessment based on bioassay or environmental source terms – Radiation dosimetry using spectral and dose measuring instruments The selected candidate will provide expertise and leadership in advancing radiation protection initiatives with DOE and other Federal agencies as well as national and international organizations including: – Interagency Steering Committee on Radiation Standards (ISCORS) – International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) – National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) – International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Minimum Qualifications: – 10 years post-PhD experience – PhD in radiation biology, health physics, computational biology, or related discipline – Experience with internal and external radiation dosimetry modeling for dose assessments of age specific males and females, fetus thru elderly adult – Experience in occupational and environmental radiological assessments and dose reconstruction based on bioassay or source terms – Experience in radiation protection guideline development – Demonstrated ability in the design and execution of complex and computationally intense radiation dosimetry problems – Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team – Strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at scientific conferences, and appointments on Federal or International radiation protection standards committees – Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills – Positive, creative, and self-starting – This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements.
