DESCRIPTION =========== The UCSD Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM) is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world class researchers study fundamental cellular processes and pathways using a variety of techniques from classical genetics and fluorescence microscopy to high throughput genomics, systems biology, and crystallography. Our 36 faculty and over 200 postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, and research staff work on the cutting edge of biology, cutting across fields from basic biochemistry and genetics to genomics, systems biology and stem cell biology. The faculty also play a major role in medical and graduate student training, providing educational and programmatic offerings that span several disciplines and provide diversity to meet the interests of a broad spectrum of students and scholars. We constantly seek to recruit highly motivated, technologically advanced, and deeply interested individuals who are ready to become a part of our dynamic research and educational environment. Under supervision, the incumbent will independently perform research to study how the endoplasmic reticulum is degraded during cell stress. Responsible for independently performing fluorescence microscopy, molecular biology, and routine protein work. Train and assist scientists in the performance of general laboratory protocols and experiments as well as perform routine lab duties. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS ====================== * Theoretical and practical knowledge of cellular and molecular biology, typically attained through a Bachelor’s degree, or combination of education and experience. * Demonstrated proficiency in PCR, cloning and general molecular biology techniques * Proven knowledge of experimental work or general laboratory experience. * Demonstrated ability to calculate and prepare chemical solutions and learn new procedures. * Ability to follow experimental protocols and skills to develop accurate data from results. * Strong ability to work under sterile conditions. Knowledge of plasmids, sterile technique, preparation of solutions/media, bacteriology and molecular cloning. * Solid computer skills and experience with various software packages. Demonstrated ability to collect, reduce and analyze data. * Able to apply appropriate work ethics and cooperate with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills to be effective in communicating and interacting with a diverse group of people within a laboratory setting. Able to work independently and as part of a team. * Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety including radioactive/biohazard handling and disposal techniques, and the ability to ensure laboratory compliance with required safety * Experience using fluorescence microscopy and imaging software. * Ability to work with a variety of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to PCR machines, luminometers, incubators, centrifuges, autoclaves, spectrophotometers, and darkroom equipment. * Proven ability to learn complex tasks with general instruction. Capable of using past laboratory research experience to perform a variety of new techniques. * Demonstrated ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS ======================== * Experience with ordering at UCSD. * Experience growing cells in tissue culture.
