Job Details Full-timeEstimated: $64,000 – $81,000 a year5 hours ago Qualifications – Laboratory experience – Communication skills – Organizational skills – Tissue culture – Growing experience – Bachelor’s degree Full Job Description Projected start date: May 2021 The Walter Lab in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at UCSF seeks applications for a Staff Research Associate I/II (SRA I/II) in protein biochemistry. The Walter lab studies how organisms survive stress by modulating key stress response pathways in cells. We discovered a small molecule called ISRIB (integrated stress response inhibitor) that restores translation and, remarkably, enhances cognition. These effects highlight the potential of targeting stress responses for therapeutics. The candidate will participate in future studies that will focus on the critical regulation of this major translational control point. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, flexible, ambitious individual with strong organizational skills. A willingness to learn new techniques and skills is essential. Good interpersonal skills are also necessary, as the job will require working in a group environment. The successful candidate will be appointed at a rank commensurate with experience and accomplishments. Responsibilities: This position will be primarily devoted to supporting research activities of the ISRIB team. Under supervision, tasks will include large scale fermentation, protein purification, cloning, mammalian cell line generation and maintenance, and protocol optimization. The ideal applicant will display a high attention to detail and take pride in their work and be a skilled communicator and a meticulous record-keeper. Department Description The Biochemistry & Biophysics Department is comprised of 26 faculty members and about 200 students and postdoctoral fellows pursuing a range of biological problems encompassing biochemistry, genetics, and cell, structural and developmental biology. The faculty are committed to graduate education and actively engaged in shaping the highly collaborative environment that makes UCSF a special place. Required Qualifications SRA 1: – BA/BS degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience – Biology laboratory experience – Critical thinking skills – Good written and oral presentation skills SRA II: In ition to above, – One or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Preferred Qualifications – Proficiency with protein biochemistry, especially protein purification – Proficiency in molecular cloning, DNA preparation, and sequencing, PCR – Experience growing mammalian cells in tissue culture – Preference for a two-year commitment About UCSF The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care.
