Staff Scientist, Optimization and Data Analytics Arconic is a global leader in manufacturing aluminum sheet, plate, and extrusions, serving primarily the ground transportation, aerospace, building and construction, industrial, and packaging end-markets. The Arconic Technology Center (ATC), located in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, serves as the headquarters for our Research and Development efforts. ATC’s focus on innovation has given us a leading position in the development of proprietary next-generation specialty alloys and manufacturing processes. Primary Purpose of the Job: Arconic is seeking to hire a Staff Engineer/Scientist, Optimization and Data Analytics at the Arconic Technology Center outside of Pittsburgh, PA (New Kensington). As a member of the Fabrication Technology Division, the successful candidate will be assigned to multiple project teams to provide leadership in the application and utilization of advanced optimization and statistical tools and methods. The candidate will be responsible for translating industrial use cases into the corresponding mathematical procedures. The candidate will be responsible for coding, deploying, and maintaining the mathematical solution within commercial and/or open source computational tools. The candidate will lead and/or collaborate with IT and subject matter experts to provide wholistic solutions that solve manufacturing and/or business-oriented optimization and analytics challenges. The candidate is expected to solve problems to root cause and initiate projects through collaboration with peers across the company. The candidate shall have the ability to drive projects to completion and effectively communicate results through reports, patents, and/or presentations. As such, excellent communication skills are required. Major Activities / Key Challenges: Interact with stakeholders across Arconic operations to identify optimization opportunities and requirements. and convert them into formal optimization problem statements, including constraints and multiple objectives. Apply classical optimization and/or statistical methods in the specific context of Arconic products and processes. Formulate problems for statistical analysis through an understanding of the underlying engineering and process context. Iterate with stakeholders to estimate the potential value of optimization, and to improve the formulation of optimization procedures. Estimate cost and duration of optimization related activities, as well as detailing execution steps and explaining it to stakeholders with varied backgrounds. Perform computational implementation of optimization procedures, using software packages such as (but not limited to) CPLEX, Gurobi, GLPK, R, Python, JMP, Matlab, MS-Excel Solver. Interact with and operate plant databases to obtain data necessary for the implementation of optimization procedures. Specify and/or develop web interfaces that allow end users to operate optimization applications from a data input/data output perspective, without requiring knowledge of optimization theory or practice. Provide technical mentoring in optimization, statistics, and data analytics across the organization. Essential Knowledge & Skills / Education: M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field with a focus in Optimization and/or Data Analytics. Proficiency in general optimization, with focus on Operations Research (Linear Programming, Combinatorial Optimization, Mixed/Integer Optimization, Dynamic Programming). Proficiency in R programming language. Intermediate to advanced computing programing skills in environments such as (but not limited to) CPLEX, Gurobi, GLPK, R, Python, Matlab, C/C++, Perl, JMP, MS-Excel Solver. Competency in relational databases (MS-SQL, PostGRESQL, etc.) and data historians (OSIsoft PI, etc.). Exploratory data analysis, data discovery, transformation, and visualization. Proficiency in application of classical statistical methods including hypothesis testing, linear and nonlinear modeling, multivariate methods, design of experiments, and time series analysis. Ability to work with other competencies (Manufacturing, IT) to deploy optimization and/or data science applications for widespread use. Capability in deploying models on web applications (e.g. R-Shiny, Javascript, etc.). Strong written and verbal communication skills (technical writing and presentation). Working knowledge of engineering and/or manufacturing processes. Ability to develop innovative and practical solutions to complex problems without direct technical supervision. Capability to lead projects of significant scope and technical complexity. Basic Qualifications: M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field with a focus in Optimization and/or Data Analytics. 5+ years of experience in developing and applying optimization and/or data analytics solutions. Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship in not available for this position. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Analytics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field with a focus in Optimization and/or Data Analytics. 7+ years of experience in developing and applying optimization and/or data analytics solutions. 3+ years of experience in industrial operations, logistics and supply chain, and/or manufacturing environment. Proficiency in Linear and Non-linear Optimization. Proficiency in Heuristic Optimization Methods (Genetic Algorithms, Simulated Annealing, Particle Swarm, Ensemble Methods). Ability to develop mathematical models for optimization using exact (linear and integer programming) and approximate (metaheuristics, genetic algorithms, simulated annealing) methods. Demonstrated experience in creating mathematical models in OPL using solvers such as GLPK and/or CPLEX. Ability to deploy machine learning models within an optimization framework to optimize a complex system. Proficiency in data mining, validation, and classification. Proficiency in experimental design including factorial designs, response surface designs, and hierarchal designs. Quality methods including statistical quality control, statistical process control, and measurement capability analysis. Reliability methods including parametric modeling, survival analysis, tolerance intervals, and bounds data driven and event driven analytics. Competency with statistical software package (e.g. R, JMP, etc.).
