Under the direct supervision from a designated supervisor, assist with duties in the COVID-19 molecular testing section at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory as part of the University of Illinois COVID-19 initiative called SHIELD, which intends to Target, Test and Tell COVID-19 status for faculty/staff/students on the UIUC campus. These include preparing master mixes, cleaning and disinfecting laboratory spaces and equipment, unpacking supplies, and removing packaging and waste from the laboratory.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
– Processing and proper handling of infectious substances, including checking in samples and proper identification of samples
– Assist maintaining stock of laboratory supplies
– Removal of laboratory waste and packaging for safe disposal
– Cleaning and disinfecting of laboratory spaces and equipment
– Unpacking laboratory supplies and removing supply boxes from laboratory
Rate of Pay:
Pay Rate will be $14-$15 per hour depending on knowledge and experience.
Must be a minimum of 18 years old to apply.
One year of laboratory experience.
Ability and willingness to follow simple instructions. Ability to lift containers of 50 pounds or less.
Extra Help Positions:
Extra Help employees are appointed to fulfill casual or emergent needs within units. The amount of time for which services are needed is not usually predictable and payment for work performed is on an hourly basis and based on actual hours worked. Extra Help employees do not receive holiday pay or paid sick or vacation leave.
Extra Help employees are required by State Universities Civil Service System rules to take a 30-calendar-day break after working 900 hours. At the end of the 30-day period, you may begin another 900-hour employment cycle in a new position if available.
