Job Details Full-timeEstimated: $33,000 – $42,000 a year5 hours ago Qualifications – Laboratory experience – Computer literacy – Computer skills – Bachelor’s degree Full Job Description Overview: POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Veterinary Services Manager or designee, the Veterinary Technician III provides support in the research animal facilities including the clinical assessment and treatment of multiple animal species, specimen collection and processing, assistance with rodent breeding colony management, and occasional assistance with surgery and anesthesia. This position is considered essential, and as such requires weekend, holiday, and off-hours coverage as needed and/or on a rotating basis. Responsibilities: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Mentor and assist with the training of staff interns, and visiting students Assume Management responsibilities and leadership when the manager of veterinary services is unavailable Assist with the development and revision of departmental SOPs Monitor and administer anesthesia and perform minor surgery Communicate with research staff regrading clinical cases Assist with packing animals or export to external institutions Identify and report animal welfare concerns and/or IACUC protocol deviations Assist with the management of small and/or basic rodent breeding colonies Handle, restrain, and sex multiple species of laboratory animals Ensure accurate maintenance of animal health and animal room records Assist with diagnostic laboratory testing in support of the health surveillance or research programs including parasitology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis. Perform clinical evaluations of laboratory animals Provide clinical treatments, administer drugs and fluids, collect specimen, vaccinate and euthanize animals. Serve as a lead technician in at least one area of specialized expertise Identify and report atypical findings with the physical plant including animal housing conditions, maintenance deficiencies, and safety hazards Perform other duties as required. Qualifications: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: BS. in Animal Science or Veterinary Science (or equivalent relevant technical experience in laboratory animal science or veterinary medicine) 1-3 years of relevant technical experience in laboratory animal science AALAS certification at the LATG level required (or may be obtained within 18 months of hire) Basic computer proficiency and math skills. ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Bending, stooping, and lifting Minimum Personal Protective Equipment; scrubs, exam gloves, head cover, dust mask, shoe covers. Must be able to shower as required by the facility traffic pattern policy. Must avoid all rodents as pets, and entrance into animal colonies, which might serve as a vector of disease introduction into the research animal facility.
