This key leadership role in the organization reports directly to the Chief Scientific Officer. The successful candidate will lead a group of talented chemists and research associates in advancing novel antibody conjugates, containing small molecule biological pathway modulators, from discovery to clinical candidate nomination. This position requires a high level of creativity, technical expertise in the design and synthesis of novel small molecules as well as an understanding of the design, synthesis, and characterization of novel antibody drug conjugates. Previous experience in establishing relationships and overseeing activities at partner CROs is required. The incumbent will represent the company externally and be a positive influence on Silverback’s corporate culture. This position is preferably based in Seattle, but flexible for the right candidate. Key Responsibilities: Deliver small molecules for use in antibody drug conjugates that result in the advancement of a portfolio of novel drug development candidates. Contribute to the selection of small molecule targets to continue to expand Silverback’s portfolio. Design and execute on research and medicinal chemistry strategies for rapid progression of drug discovery projects. Contribute to Intellectual Property strategies to protect the company’s discovery research assets. Effectively represent the company and portfolio programs at scientific conferences and to external parties. Evaluate, select, and manage CROs to support chemistry activities and ADME studies. Contribute to the preparation of reports and regulatory documents to enable productive interactions with health agencies. Collaborate with CMC to ensure the successful manufacturing of portfolio candidates. Manage key relationships and communicate effectively with partners across the company, including preclinical biology, biomarker/translational sciences, bioinformatics, protein engineering, and CMC. Hire, develop, coach, and manage performance of a team of scientific and technical staff, including director and senior director level leaders. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Chemistry or related scientific field and 15+ years of progressive medicinal chemistry experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry required. 8+ years of team management experience including director level staff, scientists, and synthetic chemistry staff at CROs. Recognized medicinal chemistry expert with clear track record in shepherding molecules through discovery and lead optimization as evidenced by a strong patent and publication record. Successful leadership of small molecule discovery, development programs as evidenced by their progression to late stage clinical development/approval. Demonstrated creativity in leveraging existing chemical matter as a starting point for the discovery and lead optimization of new, proprietary molecules. Expertise and demonstrated track record of defining lead optimization strategies, inclusive of appropriate ADME and PK studies. Highly collaborative and proven success and interest in representing Chemistry function on cross-functional leadership teams. Demonstrated experience interfacing with CMC. Experience in representing programs in BOD and external facing meetings.
