Description :
The USRA Science and Technology Institute (STI) is seeking a two-year appointment for a visiting scientist. The ideal candidate would have experience in thin film research toward the advancement of reflective optics for space-borne x-ray telescopes. This position will work closely with personnel in the x-ray astronomy group at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. This task will involve knowledge of single and multiplayer thin films, vacuum deposition systems, mechanical and optical properties of various materials, etc. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: – Deposition of single and multilayer thin films (i.e. of sub-nanometer thickness) by the process of magnetron sputtering. – Maintenance, assembly, and troubleshooting of various vacuum deposition system components. Motion control programming and troubleshooting. Design of various vacuum compatible mechanical fixtures used for conducting experiments. – Characterization of the mechanical and optical properties of various material compositions of single and multi-layer thin films using x-ray reflectometry, atomic force microscopy, and other analytic methods. – Design and optimization of multi layered thin films structures through computational methods to achieve a desired reflective spectral response over various x-ray photon energies. – Contribute to peer-reviewed journal publications and/or conference presentations. – Other job-related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications: Education: – PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Material Science, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Experience: – 0-6 years of post-graduate experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: – X-ray Astronomy – Reflective Optics – Thin Films (sub-nanometer thickness) – Magnetron Sputtering – Vacuum Deposition Systems – Mechanical and Optical Properties of Various Materials – Excellent Oral, Written, and Presentation Skills (both technical and non-technical) Attributes: – Communication – Technology Competent – Desire to keep learning – Organized – Reliable – Punctual – Flexible – Ethical – Patient – Focused – Courteous – Professional Technology: – Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc), its applications and image processing software. – Knowledge of electronic equipment, computer hardware and software, including applications. – Proficient use of standard office equipment.
