Position Details:
Title: Adhesives Laboratory Technician
Position Type:  1 year contract with additional opportunity contingent upon performance and continued business need
Job Location: Auburn Hills, MI
Shift: 1st shift
Benefits: 401K, Dental insurance, Life Insurance, Medical Insurance, Vision Insurance 
Compensation: $28-$30.75/HR
 
Responsibilities:
This role supports new product development and maintenance of existing products in close collaboration with chemists, technicians, customers, and suppliers. The position involves participating in the development, testing, qualification, and scale-up of adhesive formulations.
 
Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Co-develop new products based on customer needs and business strategy
  • Prepare adhesive batches, conduct lab tests on pastes and cured elastomers or structural adhesives, prepare substrates, and collect and document data
  • Support scale-up efforts in accordance with established procedures and process capabilities
  • Learn and apply best laboratory practices to work independently, safely, and efficiently
  • Ensure product quality and performance meet customer requirements
  • Understand and promote environmental, health, and safety practices; set a positive example
  • Evaluate new materials or components
  • Maintain lab equipment as the designated equipment owner
  • Conduct experiments with high quality, analyze data, and interpret results
  • Learn and operate analytical instruments such as FTIR, DSC, DMA, and TGA

 
Essential Functions:
 

  • Preparing prepolymer and adhesive batches:
    • Lift and move pails up to 50 lbs daily
    • Weigh raw materials and load mixers
    • Scrape mixer bowls, remove adhesives, and clean equipment
    • Package samples and manage conditioning environments
  • Characterizing/testing adhesives:
    • Perform liquid property tests (viscosity, rheology, sag panels)
    • Apply adhesives to substrates using manual or automatic caulking guns
    • Test lap shear, quick knife, dispense force, and other mechanical properties
  • Lab preparation:
    • Inventory, order, organize, and distribute materials
    • Maintain clean workspaces, dispose of waste, and restock supplies
  • Project preparation and documentation:
    • Use an electronic lab notebook to document plans, work, and data daily
    • Conduct and record health and safety audits

 
Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a STEM field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Previous laboratory experience in an industrial or R&D setting required
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to working safely and efficiently
  • Self-motivated, able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, eager to learn new skills, and able to effectively prioritize and plan work
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; enjoys working with a diverse team
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams)
  • Comfortable entering data and performing basic analysis in Excel (Sum, Average, Standard Deviation); able to recognize abnormal data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds, and frequently lift and move up to 40 pounds
  • Knowledge or experience with polymers preferred but not required
