Job Title: Lab Assistant

Job Description:
The Laboratory Assistant serves a vital role in supporting the laboratory team by performing various routine tasks with precision, accuracy, and efficiency. This position ensures smooth laboratory operations through accurate specimen handling, equipment maintenance, and adherence to safety protocols. Although this is an entry-level role, it is crucial to the quality and reliability of diagnostic testing by enabling the work of laboratory professionals. The Laboratory Assistant must demonstrate strong attention to detail, the ability to multitask, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily lab activities accurately and in a timely manner under supervisor direction.

  • Sort, receive, and prepare specimens for testing, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and slide preparation.

  • Conduct routine instrument maintenance and assist with QA/QC procedures.

  • Maintain accurate data records such as temperature charts and specimen logs.

  • Prepare reagents and media as required for testing procedures.

  • Build worklists, retrieve stored specimens, and resolve pending lists or missing sample issues.

  • Decontaminate work areas regularly and follow proper disposal of biohazardous materials.

  • Conduct weekly radioactive wipe tests and change gas cylinders as needed.

  • Operate laboratory information systems and use standard PCs for data entry and reporting.

  • Complete all required training and competency checklists.

  • Comply with PPE guidelines and all laboratory safety regulations.

  • Interact professionally and respectfully with coworkers and internal/external clients.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to perform quality, error-free tasks in a structured, high-throughput environment.

  • Capable of managing multiple tasks and prioritizing efficiently.

  • Strong retention skills for technical processes and procedures.

  • Team-oriented with a respectful and professional demeanor.

  • Willingness to learn new tasks and adapt to changing laboratory needs.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Medical assistant training is helpful.

  • Completion of math and science coursework is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • No prior experience is required for this entry-level role.

  • Any prior exposure to laboratory or clinical environments is a plus.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to follow strict protocols and retain technical procedures.

  • Comfortable working with computers and laboratory information systems.

  • Willing to comply with all safety standards and PPE requirements.
