Overview:

SCIENTIST (ERDC)

Bowhead is seeking a Scientist to join our team in Vicksburg, MS to support our US Army Corps of Engineers customer at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) for a recently awarded Environmental Lab contract. The ERDC Environmental Lab contract is tasked with satisfying Army and Department of Defense (DoD) requirements which may include: biological and environmental studies, analysis of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna, as well as abiotic features (e.g., sediment, soil, and groundwater), biological processes, environmental research on imperiled, invasive, and keystone species, research on dredged material, water quality assessment, and basic and applied environmental research to determine the adverse effects of civil works activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide research assistance to execute a monitoring plan for documenting the effects of river reintroduction into the Maurepas Swamp, Louisiana.
  • Provide field, laboratory, and data analysis support for monitoring studies focused on swamp physicochemical, hydrologic, and vegetation responses to a river diversion designed to enhance natural processes to benefit community resources (e.g., water quality, nutrient reduction, swamp health, etc.).
  • Major tasks include: extensive field data collection; laboratory analytical soil and water testing, documenting changes in nutrient cycling before, during, and following diversion operation, and assistance with data interpretation and annual report writing.
  • To address each of these research tasks, the Scientist will conduct repeated field surveys, collect and evaluate samples from the field, and report detailed findings.
  • Perform several different methods to evaluate soil, vegetation, and water properties including: (a) soil/sediment/vegetation sample collection and (b) laboratory soil/sediment/vegetation characterization. Collectively these measurements will inform the ways in which soil/sediment/vegetation interactions are influenced by river diversions and assess their potential to improve water quality, sediment, and vegetation conditions.
  • Participation in weekly team meetings to provide oral updates about ongoing work.

  • A monthly report shall summarize progress made, problems encountered, and resolution of problems.

Additional tasks and responsibilities of the role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Organizing and performing field data collection and laboratory analyses.
  • Analyzing experimental data, interpreting results, and preparing detailed reports and summaries of findings.
  • Maintaining thorough and accurate logs of all work-related activities.
  • Utilizing computers and computer-interfaced equipment to complete assigned duties efficiently and effectively.
  • Organizing and maintaining work areas, equipment, and supplies to ensure a safe and productive workspace.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and utilizing laboratory and field equipment as required.
  • Performing additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned to support the team's goals and operations.

Qualifications:

• A BS in related field is required in addition to at least one to two (2+) years of experience in the field or related area

• Must have knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures as related to biological and environmental studies

• Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite – Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts

• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

Physical Demands:
• Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds
• Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time
• Must be able to twist, bend, and squat periodically

SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain a Public Trust (NAC) level clearance. US Citizenship is a requirement for this location.
