The Opportunity

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Scientist I – Product Improvement within our Cardiometabolic business unit in San Diego.  The scope of this position is responsible in leading research, experimental design/execution, and implementation of strategies formulated to develop next generation assays and resolve technical issues in coordination with all departments. 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Troubleshoot any technical issues in the manufacturing of the glucose and lipid devices, in support of departmental projects and site objectives.
  • Develop and execute complex, robust experiments to be performed individually, for junior staff, and other departments as necessary.
  • Participate as an integral member of the technical staff on site in development of strategies and methodologies.
  • Work closely with management in product improvement, process improvement, and streamlining processes.
  • Research (through literature review) and implement innovated methods for formulation and production to resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate experiments, review results, and draw conclusions.
  • Train on any new techniques or methods to be implemented.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of experiments in a laboratory notebook and engineering/validation reports.
  • Generate and present projects, both in depth and high level, depending on requirements or audience.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously without affecting timelines or goals of projects.
  • Operate lab equipment and conduct tasks in a safe manner, adhering to established guidelines and applicable regulations.
  • Transfer developed processes to the Manufacturing Team. Write and revise process document reports and transfer protocols.
  • Ability to work with SOPs and Batch Records.
  • Knowledgeable of federal and other regulations, e.g. QSR’s, ISO, and FDA.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the development, implementation and effectiveness of the Abbott Quality Management System per ISO, FDA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Understands and is aware of the quality and business consequences which may occur from the improper performance of their specific job. Has awareness of device defects that may occurring their area of responsibility, including product design, verification and validation, manufacturing and testing activities.
  • Responsible for exhibiting professional behavior with both internal/external business associates that reflects positively on the company and is consistent with the company’s policies and practices.
  • Perform other duties & projects as assigned.
     

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS | EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of 4-8 years (BA/BS), 2-4 years (MS) or 1-3 year (PhD) in biological science, or related discipline with laboratory work directly applicable to duties.
  • Excellent presentation, oral and written communication skills, computer skills with MS Office applications.
  • Ability to solve challenging problems and deal with a variety of topics in complex situations.
  • Ability to differentiate between red, blue and green.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Good documentation skills
  • Strong technical writing skills.
     

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated skills in carrying out innovative research with minimal guidance in an accurate and effective manner.
  • Able to work with a variety of people on multiple tasks.
  • Able to be flexible with changing priorities.
  • Able to work effectively individually and in groups.
  • Must have a proven track record of problem solving skills and developing strategic solutions to produce deliverables and meet timelines.  
  • Equipment validation experience is desired.
  • Six Sigma and DOE training is a plus.
  • Relevant work experience will include project leadership, planning, and execution.
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office applications, QMS, ERP, and statistical software.
