Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary
The laboratory animal program supports faculty research programs by providing comprehensive services related to the care and use of laboratory animals. These services include animal purchasing and receiving, daily animal care, and continuous health monitoring across multiple species.

The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care of laboratory animals in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and institutional laws, regulations, and standard operating procedures. This role requires hands-on animal husbandry, sanitation, health surveillance, and accurate recordkeeping to ensure animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

The program provides care for a variety of laboratory animal species housed in multiple research facilities throughout the city of San Francisco.

Scope of Duties

  • Provide daily animal care and husbandry, including feeding, watering, and cage changes.
  • Perform room sanitation and maintain animal housing areas according to SOPs and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor animal health and promptly report abnormalities or concerns.
  • Maintain equipment and animal housing infrastructure.
  • Perform accurate recordkeeping, including:
    • Per-diem records.
    • Animal health surveillance reports.
    • Feed logs.
    • Temperature and humidity charts.
    • Animal receipt and disposition logs.
  • Operate cage washers and autoclaves for cleaning and sterilization.
  • Follow all safety, biosecurity, and compliance requirements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support research operations

Role Expectations
Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or assigned lead, the Animal Technician performs all duties associated with the Assistant Animal Technician classification and supports the program mission. Animal Technicians are expected to:

  • Identify, address, and immediately report issues related to animal health, safety, or compliance.
  • Ensure proper care and ethical use of animals.
  • Perform basic technical procedures as required to support research activities.
  • Work independently or collaboratively, depending on assignment needs

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of 1 year of animal handling experience or laboratory animal sanitation equipment operation.
  • Ability to recognize and communicate animal health information to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, legible, and permanent records.
  • General knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple laboratory animal species.
  • Knowledge of animal health monitoring and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents.
  • Ability to operate cage washers and autoclaves.
  • General understanding of federal, state, and licensing agency regulations.
  • Basic computer skills, including:
    • Email communication.
    • Barcode scanning for cages.
    • Syncing PDAs for electronic health surveillance reporting.
    • Online training platforms and electronic timesheet submission.
  • Ability to follow instructions, institutional policies, and work rules.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Satisfactory job performance throughout the probationary period

Physical and Safety Requirements

  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and walk on hard surfaces for up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to push, pull, lift, and safely move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
    • Protective clothing.
    • Safety glasses.
    • Safety shoes.
    • Gloves.
    • Face masks or respirators as assigned.
  • Compliance with all safety rules, including no eating, drinking, or smoking in animal or campus facilities

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification (AALAS) and one year of animal care experience; or
  • High school diploma/GED and two years of animal care experience with species relevant to the role; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position.

Shift:

  • Day, 5×8 hours (06:00 – 15:00)
  • Monday–Friday
