Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary
The Animal Technician is responsible for the daily care of laboratory animals in accordance with applicable federal, state, and institutional regulations. Responsibilities include cage and rack changes; delivery of food and water per established procedures; maintenance of equipment and animal housing areas according to standard operating procedures; and accurate recordkeeping. Recordkeeping duties include per diem records, animal health surveillance, feed logs, temperature and humidity charts, and animal receipt and disposition logs. Additional duties may be assigned as operational needs require.

Under the direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor or an assigned lead, the Animal Technician performs all duties within the scope of the Assistant Animal Technician role and supports the overall mission of the animal care program. Technicians are expected to identify, remediate, and promptly report issues; ensure proper care and use of animals; and perform select technical procedures as required to support research activities.

Scope of Duties

  • Animal care and room sanitation.
  • Animal health observation and reporting.
  • Recordkeeping and documentation.
  • Equipment and facility maintenance.
  • Animal husbandry across multiple species.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum of one (1) year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation equipment operations experience.
  • Ability to communicate animal health information to appropriate personnel and maintain clear, legible, permanent records.
  • Working knowledge of feeding, caging, and space requirements for multiple laboratory animal species.
  • Ability to identify animal health concerns and regulatory compliance issues and report findings to veterinary, research, and compliance staff.
  • Knowledge of disinfection, sanitation, and cleaning agents; ability to operate cage washers and autoclaves.
  • General knowledge of federal and other licensing agencies’ regulations.
  • Satisfactory job performance during any probationary employment period.
  • Ability to follow instructions; work independently or collaboratively.
  • Basic computer proficiency (email, barcode scanning, syncing handheld devices for electronic health surveillance reporting, online training platforms, and electronic timesheet submission).
  • Ability to comply with work rules (e.g., no eating or drinking in animal areas; no smoking at facilities).
  • Physical ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and work on hard surfaces up to 7 hours per day.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (protective clothing, eye protection, safety shoes, gloves; masks and respirators as assigned).
  • Ability to push/pull heavy objects and safely lift or move loads up to 50 pounds

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of training equivalent to the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification (AALAS) and one (1) year of animal care experience; or
  • High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of animal care experience with species relevant to the role; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential duties of the position
